So what exactly is a chip butty?
The Chip Butty is a marvellous carb laden invention, traditionally eaten as a late night snack after a few too many drinks to soak up the booze.
Anyone from the UK will know the famous chip butty, if you are not British you may wonder what an earth this is. Well, it's very simple, a butty comes from the north of England and means a sandwich. Chips are fries - but they must be thick cut. The bread is, with no variations, white and with butter. Add your sauce of choice and voila! A magnificent, calorific, artery clogging chip butty!
The right chips for a chip butty
The correct chip for your butty is important, without the proper chip your butty will just be a poor imitation.
These look delicious, but French fries are too thin for a chip butty! They are too crispy, you need more potato and more soggy grease!
Stay away from the fast food chain and walk on by to find a good English chip shop to find some proper chips.

Perfect chip butty chips! Soft, greasy and fat. Pretty much how you will turn out if you eat these every day.
Deep fried chips from a chip shop are the best for your butty! Look at these beauties, mmmmm tasty!
The best bread for a chip butty
This lovely looking loaf would taste wonderfully fresh, but is no good for a chip butty. A baguette may be ok, but it's still a bit too posh. No ciabatta, no sour dough, no brioche and nothing organic or looks like it is homemade!
And definitely NOT brown bread.

Now this is ideal, large white slices of bread buttered liberally. Perfect.
Now all you need to do is add your chips, a generous handful, add the sauce and place another buttered slice on the top.
Sauce with your chip butty?
I wouldn't choose any sauce myself, but the choice for your chip butty could be ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise (if you are feeling continental and fancy) or brown sauce. Plenty of salt and vinegar can/must be added too!

How many calories are in a chip butty? Well, you can safely assume way over 500 calories. Very sinful and best avoided by slimmers. Ditto the saturated fat, an awful lot.
