Chipboard Boxes as Custom Packaging Solutions

Ranked #4,897 in Business & Work, #156,987 overall

Chipboard Boxes are the most widely used form of custom packaging.

A recent study found that up to 35% of purchase decisions can be attributed to great custom packaging while advertising can only sway up to about 8% of purchases. As much as 70% of purchase decisions are made in store. This means that the vast majority of purchases are driven by creative Packaging Solutions and design.

We live in a New Media World where spontaneity and impulse rule the day. Much of our shared knowledge about ourselves comes to us through a commercial process called "branding". The process starts early. A marketing professor estimates that 10% of a two year old's nouns are brand names. And a recent English study estimates that one out of every four babies speaks a brand name as a first word.

The point is that packaging and branding matter. The choice you make as a business owner as to how and who handles the packaging of your product could mean the difference between success and failure. Chipboard boxes are a staple of this arena.

What are Chipboard Boxes?

Printed Chipboard Chipboard boxes are very popular when it comes to custom packaging because they are relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and are environmentally friendly. The material of chipboard boxes vary, but the four main categories are SBS (solid bleached sulphate), CCNB (clay coat news back), CCKB (clay coat kraft back) or Kraft. Although each material has different benefits and uses, SBS seems to be one of the most convenient materials to use for client needs. Chipboard boxes are measured by points, therefore, the strength of the box is directly related to the point size of the cardboard; the most common points are 20 and 24. The chipboard itself is made from pieces of recycled paper that are compressed together in a pressure-heating process then bonded with glue or resin. Adding a white clay based coat to the cardboard is recommended so that the colors and information that are printed on the box show bright, clearly and consistent with every new order. For those who are more concerned with the structural integrity of the box, most packaging experts recommend CCKB material. Packagers also offer accents, such as foil stamping, embossing, debossing, and spot UV services. Overall, chipboard boxes are very convenient for manufacturers that wish to display their products quickly upon delivery at retail locations.

Types of Chipboard Boxes

STE (Same side Tuck End)This section focuses on the different types of chipboard and what they are most commonly used for.

TTABTM ( Tuck Top Auto Bottom) - tuck top is a very popular style because it allows for easy printing and quick assembly after its production. You can find these boxes most commonly being used in coffee, tea, sporting goods, and retail packaging.

STE (Same Side Tuck End) - this box is glued by folding and locking on the same side. The STE overall gives a better graphic presentation and is commonly used for vitamin, perfume, soap, and food packaging.

RETT (Rolled End Tuck Top) - This box needs to be folded when it is assembled because the sides are e different layers of chipboard that are added for strength. This type of packaging is found in retail, coffee, vitamin, and Costco packaging.

RTE (Reverse Tuck End) - this box is the same as STE, however, the ends tuck on opposite panels. This type of box is also found in the areas of perfume, soap, software, and pharmaceutical packaging.

RTE With Hang Panel - this box is the same as the RTE box described above, however, the hang panel provides more spacing for marketing and advertising.

Set Up Boxes -Although these boxes take up a lot of room in the shipping process, the customer receives the supply already assembled so that no marginal work is needed. These boxes can be seen with board games, candy, cosmetics, jewelry, and other packaging.

Dispenser Boxes - the dispenser chain is also very popular when dealing with a multitude of products. This box is simple to use because gravity does the work after it is opened. These boxes are very commonly found in medicine, candy bar, retail, tea, and food packaging.

Blister Card/Clamshell- Blister cards and clamshells are one of the most popular packaging solutions in which the customer needs to be able to see the product. We've all seen these at any retailing, electronic, cosmetics, and other specialty products.

TTSNLBTM (Tuck Top Snap Lock Bottom) - This box is the same as the tuck top auto bottom except the bottom is not pre glued. Instead the bottom has 4 flaps that fold in, creating a stronger hold.
