About Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds

Chipping Campden or Campden - not Chipping Camden! - is one of the most charming and unspoilt of the Cotswold towns.

Consisting of Chipping Campden, Broad Campden and Blockley, and set on the edge of the Cotswolds, this historic town in north Gloucestershire is a Mecca for discerning visitors, from home and abroad.

Chipping Campden was once described as the most beautiful village in England. It's easy to see why.

(More about Chipping Campden?)

Campden receives tourists from around the world (but not too many - see below) but is also a great place to live. It is surrounded by beautiful open countryside and still maintains a unique collection of local businesses, shops and home and garden services. Campden locals are proud to be residents of Campden, proud it remains mostly unspoilt.

Whether they are proud of some of the odd events that take place is another matter. I'm talking about...

The Pudding Club
If puddings be the food of love... Roam no further than Chipping Campden in the heart of the Cotswolds to indulge in your passion along with 40 to 50 fellow aficionados twice a month throughout the year

The Olympick Games
This is all about Robert Dover's Olimpick Games (not Olympic) on Dover's Hill, Chipping Campden. Yes, you read that right. Find out more here

Ordinary stuff happens too I'm sure!

Reasons To Visit Chipping Campden

(Why Campden suits the discerning tourist on a weekend break!)

For such a charming place, Chipping Campden mostly remains unnoticed amongst the Cotswold treasures. It is a little odd why so many more people visit nearby (and packed-with-tourists) Burford when it comes to weekend breaks in the Cotswolds for sure.

But, secretly, I think the locals prefer it that way ;-)

So here are nine reasons you might want to visit the lovely and delectable Chipping Campden. Or, when it comes to weekend breaks in the Cotswolds, let's see if you are indeed a discerning visitor then?

1) Do you like to visit towns and villages full of the usual high street stores, or do you prefer to buy high quality items from unique local stores? (For example, in Campden you will find jewelers, antique shops, wine merchants, arts and crafts stores and even patisseries.)

2) Do you like quaint English pubs with names like The King's Arms, or you do prefer supping from venues with coarser names like The Slurping Toad?

3) Do you like to visit interesting art galleries all within easy walking distance from each other?

4) Do you love to learn more about English history and to explore historic houses and gardens?

5) Do you like to go on fabulous little walks (or even arduous long ones like The Cotswold Way)?

6) Are you in interested in odd English festivals like The Olympick Games. (See below.)

7) Do you prefer your English weekends away to be understated, rather than brash and overblown?

8) Do you prefer to drink a cup of English cream tea sometimes rather than the usual Starbucks Latté?

9) Do you like being so charmed by a place, and the buildings and houses you find there, that you simply have to have your photo taken with them in the background?

And, continuing being a bit cheeky, with a tenth extra reason:

10) Do you know what the expression "quintessentially English" means?

That last one's a trick question, actually. If you visit Campden you will discover all of the above and even an example of what many say is "quintessentially Englishness"

Note: this is based on Reasons To Visit Chipping Campden (with permission, of course!)

Lovely place! My husband was actually born in here at the Dove House. We visited and stayed 1 week in Chipping Campden several years ago. The Cotswold Way is fantastic walk. Real "English-taste" preserved in here !
