Changing the Face and Body of Beauty Contests

If any one could be the banner girl on size acceptance for young women in the UK then Chloe Marshall may be their shining star. She hails from Guildford, England and competed to win Miss Surrey, a beauty competition in the United Kingdom. Now that she safely has the winning banner strung around her curvy form she wants to go on and win Miss England.

Chloe Marshall platform includes showing young women that it is ok to be plus size and that plus size and beautiful are not oxymoronic. One of the main assumptions about overweight women is that they must be lazy. Chloe is far from lazy. The future beautician likes to exercise and her routine includes a healthy dose of running and horse back riding.

She has received a mixture of positive and negative press but lets face it any kind of press is helpful these days. This lens is dedicated to the beautiful Chloe Elizabeth Marshall.

Three reasons to love Chloe Marshall

  • 1. She's a curvy chic.

  • 2. She's goal-oriented.

  • 3. That smile!

"I wanted to go through to the Miss England finals to break the stereotype that you have to be tall and skinny to be considered beautiful."

The Miss England winner was Laura Coleman and Vanessa Lansom is the second runner up.

Let's Attack the Curvy Teenager

Monica Grenfell, a writer/dietitian and past Miss England judge doesn't think Chloe is as fabulous as we do; in fact she thinks she's "fat, lazy and a poster girl for ill health". Anything but a role model for today's woman.

Read Grenwell's article in the Daily Mail.

Too Fat for a Tiara?

Weigh in on whether you think Chloe is too fat to ultimately win the top prize in the Miss England competition.

Do you think that Chloe Marshall sets a bad example?

Yes, she does. Her appearance in a prestigious award condones being over weight. The world is in a crisis!

ertyui says:

Yep, we should not reward unhealthy, and irresponsible... That is not fair, that is not our British way...

Avy says:

I can only speak from personal experience, but when I was 190 pounds, I did NOT look as chubby as she does. I was muscular and athletic and even though I wore a size 12/14, no one believed I was pushing 200 pounds. I can't imagine my being 6ft vs her 5'10" makes that big a difference. Muscle occupies less space than fat...

Her weight appears to come from inactivity. That's what's unhealthy. Being overweight isn't a health problem, being fat is.

Angela says:

I don't think she's really fat, but she's likely not as healthy as she could be.

Julian says:

i think she is as curvy as a basketball.....
she stands for lazyness and non-willingness to get off the couch and take care of yourself. she claims to take care of herself, but the evidence is otherwise. 135-140 pounds would be understandable, but 180.....hmmmm. I am tired of looking at obease women everywhere.

max says:

The last thing we need in a world full of obese children, is someone on the media saying it's fine to be "big and beautiful". I want my kids to be healthy, practice sports, be able to sleep in a regular bed instead of a hospital-like one. Yes, she has a pretty face, but it's definitely not my definition of beauty.

esteban says:

no we need more like her.

She's smart, she's beautiful and she's curvy. She's a perfect role model for women and young girls.

sid (aussie) says:

no way

cheeto says:

She's absolutely gorgeous!

Brad says:

Absolutely not. She's great.

Janine says:

She is not ashamed of being overweight. That's what I love about her. He professional additute, and her dignifying smile, tells us she is comfortable in her own body. When I was a size 16, I was very self concious. I hated wearing skirts & shorts, and I especially hated wearing a swim suit in front of gusy. I look up to her. <3

She does not set a bad example. Even though she is a size 16, she is confortable in the body she is in , which is something we should all learn.

Jeff says:

Gorgeous woman!!! Curvy and sexy!!! I would date her or girls just like her.
Who wants a beanpost anyways???

Amanda says:

I think she looks very healthy, and she seems to be a very poised, professional individual. The fact that she likes exercise is encouraging. Way to go, Chloe. Thanks from all of us fellow tall girls. :)

Ian Pink says:

she's one of the most beautiful girls I will ever see

Big Fat Lies: The Truth about Your Weight and Your Health

"In this authoritative, easy-to-read book, Glenn Gaesser, an exercise physiologist, challenges the conventional wisdom that excess body fat poses a danger to health. He explains that it is the fat in your diet - not your weight - that is harmful, and presents scientific evidence of the benefits of body fat. In addition, Gaesser presents a "20/20 program" for achieving optimal health and metabolic fitness through 20 minutes of daily moderate exercise and a complex-carbohydrate eating plan. This edition includes a new introduction and updated research."

Chloe Marshall (born 27 March 1991) is a British plus-size model from Cranleigh, Surrey. Having won the Miss Surrey title in March 2008, she became the first size 16 (US size 12) model to reach the finals for the Miss England tiara.

Marshall has stated that she "wanted to go through to the Miss England finals to break the stereotype that you have to be tall and skinny to be considered beautiful." However, Marshall's Body Mass Index of 25.3, which is slightly above what the body mass index classifies as overweight, has led to her being criticised for promoting obesity and ill-health.The Daily Ma...

Self-Esteem Comes in All Sizes: How to Be Happy and Healthy at Your Natural Weight

"Carol Johnson once thought of herself as an "un"--unattractive, undisciplined, undesirable, unmotivated, undeserving, uninvited--but no more! Having struggled since childhood with diets, low self-esteem, and the prejudices of others, she has come to believe that being overweight does not make you bad, lazy, or less deserving of happiness. And it has become her mission to make other people understand that their weight is not a measure of their self-worth."

Excellent lens about a woman I previously knew absolutely nothing about. I sure know a lot more now and feel that your lens is well deserving of 5 stars. As for Chloe Marshall; She's a beautiful woman and has an excellent shape too; what more could you possibly ask for?!

I don't understand how people can think that she is a poor role model, especially as compared to the usual size 0 models. Please . . . I'd rather feel great as a size 10 than starve my body for essential nutrients to maintain a size 0. Seeing all the skinny models out there certainly hasn't taught our children to eat healthy or stay slim. It's helped to create eating disorders and negative body image. There is no way that seeing a larger, more average size model can be a worse influence on our daughters than what we've seen in the media for the last 20 years. Remember when models were a perfect size 8?????

She's really pretty. Her facial features suit her shape too, so I don't think she'd look as lovely if she were any thinner.

She's gorgeous all right. I hope finally bags of bones and skin can be a thing of the past. One thing that bothers me is that these same curvy women refuse to go out with a husky man--they seem to specifically seek out scrawny guys or muscleheads. Where's the love for your husky brothers?
