Healthy Fruit Smoothie Recipes with NonFat Greek Yogurt
Here's a variety of healthy yogurt smoothie recipes that can be made with either fresh or frozen fruit, and plain or flavored nonfat Greek yogurt. These Greek yogurt smoothies are vegetarian smoothies , and are gluten free. These yogurt smoothies will boost your long term health. I make one of these on an almost daily basis. I purchase excess fruit when it is in season and freeze it for use later. The recipes include kiwi, mango, banana, blueberries, strawberries, as well as watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew. I specifically use Chobani yogurt. After trying pretty much every brand out there, in my opinion, Chobani Greek Yogurt is the best!
Yogurt vs. Greek Yogurt
The Difference between Greek and Regular Yogurt
The initial difference between regular yogurt and Greek yogurt is the production process. Greek yogurt is strained to remove the liquid whey, which gives it a thicker consistency. This also removes much of the lactose and sugar - which is contained in the whey.
here is a quick rundown of the differences:
here is a quick rundown of the differences:
- Greek yogurt is higher in protein, sometimes by as much as twice that of regular yogurt. That makes it particularly appealing to vegetarians.
- It contains roughly half the carbs as the regular kind. Those yogurts with less added sugar will have less carbs.
- Regarding fat content, you must be wary here. With both yogurt types, stick to the low fat or fat free options
- Greek yogurt has about half the sodium of regular yogurt. Keep in mind that too much salt can boost blood pressure and increase the risk of other heart problems.
- Greek yogurt loses some of its calcium through the straining process. Regular yogurt provides about 30% of the recommended daily amount vs. 20% for Greek yogurt. Not a huge discrepancy.

Benefits of Greek Yogurt
- High in Protein - 13-20 grams - the amount found in 2-3 oz of lean meat - (up to twice that of regular yogurt). More protein helps you stay full longer.
- It has 50 % less sodium. Too much sodium in your diet can contribute to hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease
- Easier to digest - Greek yogurt contains less carbohydrates than regular yogurt. As a result, it has less lactose, the sugar in dairy products that can sometimes upset people's stomachs.
- Chobani Greek yogurt, in particular, has five types of live and active cultures including three strains of probiotics which aid in digestion.
- Because Greek yogurt has a thicker, creamier consistency, it can be substituted in recipes for sour cream, cream cheese, mayonnaise, butter, and eggs and oil in baked goods.
Kiwi Smoothie
Kiwi Smoothie Recipe
Kiwi SmoothieIngredients:
- 2 very ripe Kiwi, peeled and chopped
- 1 ripe banana (mine was pre-cut and frozen)
- 1/2 cup cold plain almond milk (vanilla would be good too)
- 1/2 cup Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon pure organic honey
- (Throw in a few ice cubes, if you'd like.)
Preparation:
Add all the ingredients to your smoothie blender
Kiwi Cantaloupe Raspberry Smoothie
I happened to have this fruit all available fresh, and figured I might as well try the combination. I actually made it without adding the honey. If your cantaloupe is sweet enough, I don't think you will need it. I found it to be delicious without the added sweetness.
Ingredients:
- 1 Kiwi cut in to 1/2" pieces
- 8-10 fresh raspberries
- 1/2 cup cut cantaloupe
- 3 oz plain non-fat Chobani Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp. organic honey
Combine in blender, starting at low speed first, and increase speed as ingredients start to blend. Blend until smooth.
If preparing the smoothie for guests (or a photo shoot) it's always nice to garnish the smoothie with some fresh fruit.
Kiwi Banana Watermelon Smoothie
Granted, this one was not very colorful, but it tasted great - it was extra smooth and creamy with the yogurt and banana.Ingredients:
- 1 ripe Kiwi, peeled and chopped
- 1 ripe banana (preferably pre-cut and frozen)
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen watermelon
- 1/2 cup Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt
- 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder
Preparation:
Add all the ingredients to your smoothie blender and blend on low power til smooth. Serve immediately, and enjoy.
Believe it or not, I only had chocolate flavored whey protein powder the day I made this one. I've got to say, it was surprisingly delicious. But then chocolate combined with and of the included fresh fruit on their own make a great combination. Don't be afraid to give it a try!

Kiwi Banana Mango Smoothie
This is another yogurt smoothie creation that I threw together with the fresh friuit I had on hand. I added no sweetener as I was counting on the mango to deliver that. It came through for me and tasted great in addition to turning out ta great color. I think colorful smoothies are an added bonus that just makes the whole experience more fun!
Ingredients:- 1 Kiwi cut in to 1/2" pieces
- 1 banana cut into 1" sections
- 1/2 cup cut mango (fresh or frozen)
- 3 oz plain non-fat Chobani Greek yogurt
Combine in blender, starting at low speed first, and increase speed as ingredients start to blend. Blend until smooth.
The bright color of the mango and kiwi make this smoothie appetizing on its own. It would be most appropriate, and the color would pop even more if it were garnished with a slice of kiwi.

- 3 oz. Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt

Cantaloupe Watermelon Banana Smoothie
I was off to experimenting again with this fruit smoothie, and added fresh ground flax seeds (I grind them in my trusty little Krups Coffee and Spice GrinderIngredients:
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cantaloupe
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen watermelon
- 1 ripe banana cut into sections
- 3 oz Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsps. freshly ground flax seeds (optional)
Add all the ingredients to your smoothie blender and blend on low power, raise to higher power, blend til smooth. Serve immediately.
Flax seeds added to this yogurt smoothie. or any other smoothie, give it a boost of protein and particularly antioxidants. Keep in mind that ground flax seeds should be consumed right away as being open and exposed to air makes them start to lose their healthy benefits.

Low Calorie Triple Melon Smoothie
with Honeydew Melon, Cantaloupe and Watermelon
Okay, I am throwing this one in here even though it calls for no yogurt whatsoever. It turns out more like what I would call a slushie. I've included it because it was deliciously refreshing, and very low-cal, with the only sugars being the natural sugars from the fruits themselves.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup cut watermelon
- 1/2 cup cut honeydew melon
- 1/2 cup cut cantaloupe
- 6-8 ice cubes *as needed
Preparation:
Combine in blender, starting at low speed first, and increase speed as ingredients start to blend. Blend until smooth.
If using ice cubes, blend the fruit first and then add the ice little by little til you get the consistency and temperature you want.
Banana Blueberry Watermelon Smoothie
with Almonds and Raw Sunflower Seeds
I got creative again with this one and decided to add ground raw almonds and ground up raw sunflower seeds, processed together in my Krups Coffee GrinderIngredients:

- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen pre-cut watermelon
- 1/2 cup (approx. 3 oz) Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt

- 10-12 ground fresh almonds
- 1 tbsp. ground fresh raw sunflower seeds(optional)
Add all the ingredients to your smoothie blender and blend on low power Increase to higher speed as blending continues, and blend until smooth. Pour into glass and serve.
Here again, as in my Blueberry Strawberry Banana Smoothie, the added nuts give this smoothie an added antioxidant and protein boost.
Raspberry Mango Smoothie
Ingredients:- 1/2 cup raspberries
- 1/2 cup peeled and chopped mango
- 3 oz Chobani plain, non-fat Greek yogurt
- 4-5 ice cubes
Preparation:
Place raspberries, mango, and yogurt in a blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds. Add in the ice cubes and blend until smooth. Pour smoothie into a glass and serve.
*Note-if you like a thinner smoothie, you can add a splash of fruit juice, or almond milk.
Make Your Own Yogurt
Yogurt Makers - A Great Gift Idea
If you are really ambitious, you may prefer to make your own yogurt. It's simple, and requires no more than whole milk, (or go with organic milk) and and initially some plain yogurt or, even better, freeze-dried yogurt starter. You can purchase yogurt makers with single serve jars or one with a larger tub if you prefer to make 2 -quart batches. Yogurt makers are a great gift for health conscious friends, and also for children who enjoy kitchen projects to encourage healthy eating. Pair it with a smoothie recipe book and you will have a hit!
