  • agalova Jul 1, 2011 @ 11:16 am | delete
My husbands family uses bread to keep the cookies moist when shipping them to relatives out of town. That was the first I had heard of it, but it works great! Nice lens.
  • blanckj May 31, 2011 @ 8:57 pm | delete
Bread is a funny tip. I use it myself and people always pull the bread out and give me a puzzled look. Then it makes sense when I explain why.

  • dankyboy Sep 26, 2010 @ 12:34 pm | delete
I tried a little variation, and i thought it came out pretty well. Try adding 3-4 table spoons of golden syrup. You'll also need to cook them on a slightly lower heat for 15-20 minutes. Still nice and chewy though. Thanks for the recipe, they are awesome.

I made these one day for when my daughter came home, and when she took her first bite you could tell by the look on her face what she thought of them. She thought they were awful. I tried one, and they aren't what I was expecting at all. My husband tried one, and he had the exact same reaction as my daughter. We ended up throwing them all out. It calls for WAY too much flour. It might give them that lumpy look, but also makes them very dry.
  • Amelia. Sep 13, 2010 @ 8:38 am | delete
Couldn't sleep, thought I'd do some baking. This looked like a good recipe. Just finished cooling, about to try one....Mmmm! Delicious!

  • Guy on the Internet Sep 8, 2010 @ 10:54 pm | delete
I hacked this one because the flour was a little much for my taste. Here is how I hacked it. First of all, let me just say that Chipits are ok, but Baker's is where it's at. I am not scared to use Chipits though - they make a quality product. But that aside, here is how I hacked this recipe: A. I used 1 cup of the brownest brown sugar out there (Rogers), and 1/2 cup white instead of the 1:1 ratio you use. B. I also toned down the flour to 2 cups max, and used a completely level teaspoon of baking soda. C. I am cooking these at almost 4000 feet above sea level at 380 degrees for 10 minutes. I am not saying mine are any better, but given my preferences, these cookies come out slightly crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. ALSO: Do not roll these into a perfect ball before baking. Just pinch off a bit and throw it down, trying to keep a consistent size. This gives you a nice lumpy cookie rather than something that looks like a freaking sugar cookie your great auntie would make. Save that rolling BS for when you replace the flour with whole wheat flour and use red currants instead of chocolate chips. I know this comment sounds intense, but I take my cookies seriously. If you really want to take your cookies to the next level, add 1/8th of one teaspoon of nutmeg to your flour before you combine it with the wet ingredients. DO NOT GO BEYOND 1/8th! You will not regret how it plays off the vanilla and then gets followed up by the chocolate. OMG I think I almost died when I did this.

These worked great! And tasted delicious! Mixture looked dry and I had concerns about it not working, but in the end it all worked out great (:
  • mto92 Aug 22, 2010 @ 12:06 am | delete
I just made these on a whim, mostly out of boredom and loving to bake at midnight, and they were great! I followed the recipe exactly except I replace 6 oz of chocolate chips with butterscotch chips. I'm definitely going to copy down this recipe to make for future occasions.
  • janis Aug 15, 2010 @ 8:54 pm | delete
    thats the toll house recipe!
  • Linda in Thousand Oaks Jul 30, 2010 @ 7:17 pm | delete
These really are THE WORLD'S BEST. I went on the hunt for the best recipe and tried 5 different ones, same basic ingredients, just different proportions, and these are THE BEST. The key ingredient though is Ghiradelli bittersweet (60% chocolate) chocolate chips instead of semisweet chips. Tee-rrific!
  • cindy Jul 22, 2010 @ 8:51 am | delete
wow they're good! nice and sweet an' chewy! if u dont add salt then the flavour is much worse! GOOD JOB ;)
  • claudia! Jul 3, 2010 @ 1:56 am | delete
i like em! instead of white sugar i used brown sugar !
  • Khadeeja Feb 25, 2010 @ 9:42 am | delete
I tried this out. I didn't have brown sugar so i just used white- but it still came out fine! Thanks
  • Heba Feb 20, 2010 @ 8:22 am | delete
First time I made these cookies they were a great success.. however the second time something went wrong with the dough.. Cookies were cracked and the sugar didnt melt in the oven.. do you have any idea what could have went wrong?
  • claudia! Jul 3, 2010 @ 1:53 am | delete
well i usually add a bit of milk!
  • Elle Jul 7, 2010 @ 9:35 am | delete
Heba- First make sure you ae using butter not margarine... I grabbed it once by mistake and couldn't figure out what went wrong lol ... Second try mixing the butter (room temp) and sugar first till it is whipped the whole idea of mixing the sugar and the butter is when the sugar granules pass through the fat it creates a whole that will store the steap which in turn is a leavener, then add the eggs slowy along with the vanilla. Hope your cookies turn out better :)
  • greg Aug 11, 2010 @ 5:34 pm | delete
you just suck at baking them that time cuz you got so excited with them the second time =]
  • Yourmom Dec 31, 2009 @ 4:00 pm | delete
I made these this morning and they were the first truly successful completely yummy cookies I've made in 4 years. The extra flour works really well for the lumpy look. Also , try doubling or tripling the amount of vanilla. Cheers!
  • Freaknoodles Dec 31, 2009 @ 4:05 pm | delete
So glad they were good for you! I agree about the vanilla. I've never tripled it, but I do tend to let it overflow into the bowl when I measure it.
  • Swagger1 Dec 24, 2009 @ 6:31 pm | delete
I love chewy chocolate chip cookies and sometimes with nuts. The recipe looks delicious.
  • Gina Dec 23, 2009 @ 11:29 am | delete
They took about 18 minutes to cook, and did not turn out good at all.
  • Freaknoodles Dec 25, 2009 @ 8:28 pm | delete
18 minutes is way too long! The cookies should take only 8 to 10 minutes, and they should be just beginning to brown at the edges and set but still soft in the middle.
  • niki Feb 12, 2010 @ 2:50 am | delete
these were completely awesome. my cookie search is over & im sticking to this recipe. the cookies were chewy fluffy gooey in middle and crisp & goldish on the outside. so perfect. thank you to the person who gave this recipe! gina you must be a retarto baker. sorry but why the hellll would u leave cookies in the oven for 18 minutes! of course they turned out gross. you shouldve taken them out at 8 minutes. And dont give the "they didnt look done at 8 minutes" bull shiz. Trust me- they were done. cookies dont need to be brown or burnt to be done, they just need a tinge of golden. thats a commen mistake people make, they leave cookies in the oven way too long. FYI, theyre supposed to be kinda doughey when u pull them out. they harden a lot more as they sit
  • Criket1979 Dec 16, 2009 @ 10:51 pm | delete
Here's a wonderful trick that I've learned through the years....instead of 1 tsp of vanilla, use a small package of instant french vanilla pudding. You've got to make sure you have your butter at room temp and spend the time to fluff it good with a blender before you get going. If you don't, they cookies will turn out real flat. Also...after blending the butter, add the sugar and pudding, mix that well before adding your eggs. Gradually adding the flour mixture will keep a mixer from burning up, seems to distribute better too.
  • Joie Dec 12, 2009 @ 12:01 am | delete
Mmmm... I was without an oven for several months, and now I can't wait to bake up a storm!
Question: do you (or anyone reading this) know where I can buy a really thin, flexible spatula for removing cookies from the pan? My old faithful Ekco is about to bite the dust, and I need a good replacement. Any ideas?

I love all cookies, especially chocolate chip and yours sound great. Another great tip for making thicker, chewier cookies is to let the dough chill in the fridge for several hours before baking.

I love this recipe! But don't be fooled! The only change this cook made was to add a bit more flour. Otherwise it is verbatum Betty Crocker cookbook! There is no shame in that, as it's a great recipe!

I am a chocolate chip cookie NUT. I do the extra flour thing. (I've even increased the baking soda in a pinch) Anything for a "fluffier" cookie! Great lens!

These are by far the best cookies I have ever had. EVERYONE I know that has tried them has agreed. I have made them severals times and they are always delicious. The only problem I have is that there is a lot of mixing involved, but it is well worth it.
