How to make chocolate taste even better? Just add bacon!

If you love both chocolate and bacon, why not eat them together? No, I am not kidding. Bacon and chocolate lovers have found a way to combine their two favorite food items together, as you will see in the following featured recipes on this page.

To be honest, I was not surprised the first time I heard about this sweet-and-salty pairing. We've been putting sweet stuff on home cooked breakfast bacon for years -- I know I've drizzled maple syrup on my husband's bacon countless times (he loves it) and Elvis himself swore by the peanut-butter and bacon combination. So why not mix chocolate with bacon, two of the greatest indulgences known to man?

Please read on if you'd like to learn ways in which you can partake of this sinfully delicious combo.

Note: While chocolate, mainly the dark variety is heart-healthy, most bacons are not. A little indulgence once in a while is all right but as with everything, moderation is key.

How the chocolate+bacon fad began

A short history of this interesting sweet and salty combination.

Homer Simpson has been identified to be the first person to notice this delicious but unlikely pairing and a quick Google search revealed that mentions of this interesting combination has been around on the internet since 2005.

Chocolate-covered bacon eventually started appearing at the Minnesota State Fair under the name "Pig Lickers". It is also sold at Marini's on the Beach at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk in California, and also under the name "Pig Candy" by Roni-Sue's Chocolates in New York City. Word of mouth then made the bacon-chocolate tandem popular.

Chicago-based luxury chocolate company Vosges Haut-Chocolat joined in and launched a chocolate bacon bar known as "Mo's Bacon Bar". It contains smoked applewood bacon, alderwood smoked salt, and milk chocolate. According to the company, "Sweet and smoky and salty is the perfect trifecta."

Through the years, chocolate and bacon has become an accepted combination and chocolate dessert recipes featuring the smoky strip of pork belly have surfaced online in recent years.
