So you want to start swinging Clubbells, but don't know which weight would be best for you?
My Clubbells are, hands down, the most important tool I have ever purchased! But they are certainly not cheap, and you must take the time to decide on exactly which ones to start with. The good thing is, whichever ones you pick, you will always have a use for them. No matter how many other size Clubbells you may purchase subsequently, they all have their place in your training.
Clubbells should be viewed as an investment. They will give you a significant return over an entire lifetime, enhancing your health, strength, physical performance and pain-free enjoyment of life. One should also measure the purchase of Clubbells as an overall portion your lifetime budget for your health and fitness. Personally, I have not purchased a gym membership since I started practicing Circular Strength Training and using its signature tool, the Clubbell. That alone means I break even on my investment.
Clubbells 101: Choosing and Using Your Clubbells
FREE E-book tells you everything you need to know about getting started with Clubbell Athletics!
The Official Word
Here is a guide to choosing a Clubbell weight directly from the website of RMAX International
From RMAX International:"Ask your physician permission to begin this type of strenuous and circular resistance exercise.
Physically fit adult males get started with the Big Book of Clubbell® Training, the Encyclopedia of Clubbell® Training, and a pair of 15lbs Clubbells.
Physically fit adult females get started with the Big Book of Clubbell® Training, the Encyclopedia of Clubbell® Training, and a pair of 10lbs Clubbells.
For both men and women, these weight selections have been challenging at first but they adapted over the first two weeks or so and some were even ready for a heavier size within the first month or two. Men with thorough strength training experience and above average strength have begun with a pair of 20lbs Clubbells and women - a pair of 15lbs Clubbells."
My Personal Ordering Experience
Which weight Clubbells have I purchased?
My initial experience follows the advice from the RMAX International site. I started with a pair of 15 lbs Clubbells. I must admit that I was skeptical, but decided to remain conservative when I made that first purchase. And when I received my 15s I must say that I was a bit dismayed at how heavy they seemed and wondered if I had gone too heavy. But with consistent application of the basic mechanics and proper practice I was soon getting full benefit from my Clubbells. After training with my 15s for several months I wanted to start doing two-handed work. I debated between the Bruiser (45 lbs) and the Bruiser Jr (35 lbs). I finally decided on the Bruiser, but I was sure, when I finally received it, that I had made a mistake. I could barely do anything with it. But I consistently applied the principle of Incremental Progression from CST and before I knew it I was doing things with it that I never would have imagined that first time it came out of the box.
My final purchase, and the ones I have used most recently with my run at the Trial by Fire, is my pair of 25 lbs Clubbells. The 25s are a cool weight. They are super challenging for one handed work and provide an excellent level of resistance for refining two handed work.
I should mention that I also have a pair of Minis from my Intu-Flow set. I don't use them much, but they have come in handy for recovery work, pre-hab and as a tool to groove new skills.
You may be wondering what is on my wish list now. If I had my druthers, I think the next purchase on my list would be a pair of Bruiser Jrs. I love the idea of the challenge they would provide for one-handed work as well as the versatility and variability they would offer for two handed work.
I am 100% happy with the progression of my purchases, but I am sure that I would have been just as happy with any other configuration. Each Clubbell has its own characteristics and personality, which change according to every person's body type and preferences. To put my path into a little more perspective, for your own reference, I weigh between 145 and 150 lbs at 5'6" and have a long history of strength training and involvement in various sports.
No matter how you choose, you will be challenged and surprised by the perceived weight when you first receive your purchase. But ultimately you will be overwhelmed by the quality and versatility of the tool!
