Finding the right Freelance Graphic Designer is easier than you think...

Things to bear in mind when commissioning a freelance graphic and website designer.

When looking to commission a freelance graphic designer for either print design, website design or traditional or vector illustration, what exactly should you be looking for and what are the benefits in using a freelancer as opposed to using a design agency?

It used to be felt that a freelancer was someone who didnt fit into the agency mindset - they were too much of a loose cannon, didnt follow orders well enough or just couldnt fit into the semi corporate environment. However, nearly all freelancers these days are doing so because they are good enough to survive out there on their own with no need of an agency brand to protect them. Additionally now all you need is a computer, a good reputation, a classy portfolio and a head full of ideas. With a lack of overhead costs that agencies suffer from, their prices are invariably lower and the work provided just as, if not better, than an agency can provide. Plus, they nearly always work longer hours!

Building your relationship with your Graphic Designer

One on one works better...

Website Design CheshireWhen a client commissions a freelancer to work for them, its the start of a relationship with both parties equally important to each other. Do away with project managers, account managers, receptionists and studio directors, its just you and your designer. And this pays dividends in my opinion. Often a freelancer will become an extension of your company - someone who 'gets' what your after and duly provides. You know who you are going to speak too, and its often quicker and easier to get hold of your freelance designer than a large agency.

With the freelancers personal reputation being on the line with every job as well, you are virtually guaranteed one to one attention that cannot be replicated with an agency, You matter and that feeling is paramount.

From brochures to adverts, websites to flyers, logos to illustrations your freelancer will provide exactly what you need because they need you to come back. As an experienced freelancer, I take great interest in every graphic design project I work on and the company im working for, and stay working with my clients long after completing any commission because I listen, build a relationship and get to know my clients personally. I never advertise - all my work comes from word of mouth and that, believe me, is the best form of advertising you can have.

Simple Checks

How to ensure your designer will be the right person for you

iPad2 AdvertisingThe simplest form of checking any freelance designer out is by browsing through their portfolio. Works completed, style of design, testimonials - any of these give you the client all the opportunity in the world to ensure your graphic designer is going to produce just what you need - and on time. I have had new clients who have rung existing clients to enquire about my work and ability to hit deadlines so dont feel you cant check up. At the end of the day they provide a service, and you can check that this service will suit you.

A portfolio of designs will show you that they know what makes a page look great and have an understanding of the processes involved. See if they have a bank of work creating graphic design for a wide range of clients and their projects ranging from Brochure Design, Stationery such as Letterheads, Compliment Slips and Business Cards, Advert Design, Poster Design, to Leaflets and promotional material.
