How To Choose The Perfect Rug Size For Your Room

Area rugs come in so many different sizes, determining the perfect size for any particular space can be daunting indeed. If you are concerned about what size rug you need to use for your room, here are a few tips that will help you choose the perfect rug size and shape for your room:-

Choosing Your Rug Tip #1

Smaller Is Better In The Bathroom

Unless you have a very large bathroom, you do not need a large bathroom area rug. As a matter of fact, this will look terrible. The bathroom area rug should lay flush on the floor and not fall up against the tub, vanity or toilet.

Take a look at your bathroom and observe the size. Then choose a rug, either oval or rectangular, that will fit on the floor and not have to ride up against any fixtures in the bathroom.

Choosing Your Rug Tip #2

Do Not Overpower A Room

If you want wall to wall carpeting get wall to wall carpeting. Don't try to make-do by using an area rug so large that it entirely covers a room. This is inconvenient and clumsy looking and it will be forever bunching up as well as difficult to vacuum. The reason that wall to wall carpeting was invented was because the method of trying to cover an entire room with rugs was inconvenient. Choose a rug that will complement the décor of the room, not take over the room like the plague.

Choosing Your Rug Tip #3

Runners Should Cover The Entire Flight of Stairs

If you are using rug runners on your stairs, make sure that they cover the entire flight of stairs. Having them drop off too soon will look tacky. They need to begin at the bottom of the last stair and move to the top. There should be plenty of slack so that they can be properly affixed to each rising. You can end the runner at the top of the stairs or continue it to the end of a wall. Use a tape measure and measure the entire area that you want the runner to cover and then add on a few feet. Rug runners are sold by the yard so you are better off having too much rather than too little.

Changing Your Room With An Area Rug

There are several different ways you can change the look of your room just by the area rug you choose. Each room that you decorate makes you feel more at home and shows your guests more about your personal side. So how do you get the right look in the right room?

There are several different ways to come up with the most logical solution but no matter which way you go, you still need to know how to determine the size area rug you will need to get the look you want.

There are several different things that will help you determine the size area rug you need. It's not as simple as just grabbing a tape measure and then measuring. There are a few things you need to take into consideration first.

  • Do you want to dress up or dress down your room?

  • Do you want your area rug to highlight your room or become the focal point of the room?

  • Will your area rug be in the high traffic part of your room or on the side?

  • Do you have a focal point already in the room, such as a fireplace or certain piece of furniture that you do not want to take away from?

There are several different things to consider in order to get the perfect fit. You may not be able to make your decision within one day. You may need the opinion from several people before you make up your mind but that is okay. Area rugs are a big investment and one you should take too lightly.

To determine the size you will need for your dining room, you need to make sure that the area rug fits under all the legs. You also need to be able to pull your chairs out and push them in without worrying about your area rug bunching up each time. For most, it is wise to measure enough to cover this with an area rug. This will require an additional five to eight inches past the dining room table in order to comfortably set your chairs as well.

If you are trying to get an area rug that will cover over half of a room, such as a living room, you want to make sure that the area rug goes under the front legs of furniture only. The back legs are not required to be on the rug in order to look great.

You will also need to consider some other details to help you choose your area rug. You will need to know what shape of rug you want. You can purchase an oval rug or rectangle rug for the larger areas that you want to cover; square rugs and round area rugs are great for the smaller areas.

Rugs can create just about any look you are going for so the best thing to do is to plan ahead of time and write down the goal you wish to achieve when you are done with your room.
