Choosing the Perfect Natural Pillow
When considering an organic pillow, it's important to consider both the casing and the filling. For an outer cover, most organic pillow manufacturers choose organic cotton sateen. There is no other natural fabric that matches sateen for feel, flexibility, or comfort.
When stuffing an organic pillow, however, there are several options. Cotton, wool, and natural latex are the most common choices.
The disadvantages with cotton are that it compresses almost immediately, and dust mites are very drawn to the moisture that can accumulate on cotton fibers. Pillows filled with organic wool are much better than cotton--they naturally resist dust mites and can be very comfortable--but they still compress (just over a longer period) because the only thing maintaining their loft is air.
For longevity and comfort, many people have found that natural latex is the best choice. Savvy Rest solid natural latex pillows come in two forms: contour pillows for (mostly) side sleepers and soap shape pillows for back and stomach sleepers (or people who like a low pillow).
While these solid latex pillows can last for years, they aren't flexible in terms of softness or firmness. For those who'd like that flexibility, Savvy Rest also offers a shredded latex pillow. It's made by overstuffing an organic cotton fabric casing with natural shredded latex. A 7-inch zipper along the side makes it possible to remove some of the shredded latex. There is also an organic cotton sateen fabric that covers the stuffed liner, so the pillow remains soft and silky on the outside.
So, if you like a big fat natural pillow, leave it all the shredded latex in. If you want a skinny pillow, take more of it out. If you took out too much, put some back in. You can go back and forth as much as you like, and change it as often as you like.
Whether you're looking for organic wool or solid or shredded natural latex, Savvy Rest has an organic pillow that's perfect for you. Now only one decision remains: Which organic mattress to pair it with?
