I found this lens when searching for related lenses to link to from my lens on squidoo tagging. I found this to be one of the more useful lenses on the topic of keyword research for squidoo; thanks for making it!

I have had very poor results with the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, because it's not really designed for a website, blog or lens, it's designed for use in an Adwords campaign. For example, i searched for the popular word "iPad" and it came up with only 4 results actually containing the word! Also, SEOCockpit is not free, but I will have to try the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool,

You are right that it's designed for Adwords; you need to use it with a critical eye. It isn't perfect, but it's one of the most useful tools out there. I think it's best used with a grain of salt, and some common sense. Sometimes the stuff it spits out isn't terrible relevant, but there are ways to fiddle with it to get the info you want. I find that switching between exact and broad matches, and also using google's autocomplete feature to come up with ideas for related long-tail keyword phrases can help a person use google's keyword tool more effectively.

Very helpful site, Jeffwend! Your site helps us to see the value of keywords. One thing I'm searching for, though is the "Squidoo keyword requirement". How many keywords does Squidoo expect? Thanks! This lens is a favorite and rated.

When possible, in the title, the URL, and the module titles. Of course, in the content too.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks again. You have 440 over featured lenses as compared to me, 6 only. How long is your indulgence in squidoo. I wish I will reach to some stage, and earn some good tips as I go along towards this improvement. I am willing to learn and will strive. I always remember: "room of improvement is the biggest room in the world". Care to give me some more tips, everyone, so that I am speed up towards my goal.

    Thanks

Longtail keywords seem to be the thing. However using them is not always easy. Where do you need to put them to be of any value?
    BTW nice lens. Thanks.

Are keywords seasonal? For example would some gift keywords do better in the fall and not in the summer.

My niche is lighthouses and I have noticed that lighthouse jewelry has sold on some of my lighthouse lenses, so I thought I would do a lens just on lighthouse jewelry. However when I do a keyword search on lighthouse jewelry or unique lighthouse jewelry it shows very few hits. Should I abandon the subject or am I missing a tactic?

    Thanks for a great lens

Some keywords are definitely seasonal. I run a tea website and also have a lot of tea-related lenses. Tea is weakly seasonal: more traffic in the cold months. However, the effect is not as strong as you might think. Other factors, including the fact that most tea is grown in the northern hemisphere and is harvested in spring, summer, and fall, mitigate this effect somewhat. I imagine vacation- and summer- related topics, as well as anything relating to holiday shopping, would be strongly seasonal. Do you need to do anything about seasonal keywords though? I think not. Maybe just check them out with google trends so you don't overestimate the amount of traffic based on one or two good months.
