How to Choose the Right Hair Thinning Shears
Ranked #3,944 in Fashion & Beauty, #59,456 overall
Differences and Uses Between Various Thinning Shears
Again, the primary use for thinning shears is to remove bulk and blend exterior hair layers. Barbers began using thinning shears for entire haircuts by using a scissor-over-comb technique to creat a blended shape close to the head. Currently most professional salon stylists use a wide variety of professional shears to cut hair, with some stylists using a pair of thinning shears for entire cuts to achieve results almost identical to using a razor.
Types of Hair Thinning Shears
Chunking & Notching, Blending and Thinning
Most stylist use several tools when cutting hair as this offers endless possibilities for creativity and style, and it is far less labor/time-intensive. You will find that top stylists have an enitre collection of scissors that help them precisely and efficiently shape hair. Choosing the correct type of thinning shear depends mostly on the effect you're looking to create, the type of hair you're cutting, and your knowledge of how to use the shear itself.
Blending & Texturizing Shears
All-Around Performer
The best choice for less experienced stylist building a collection or just as a great utility tool are Blending & Texturizing Shears. This type of thinning shear has teeth numbered in the mid 20's and considered the most practical and multifunctional of all thinning scissor.Texturizing shears remove 40% to 70% of hair in one or two passes. Here's an example: a 6" inch shear with 26 teeth will cut 70 percent of the hair leaving a soft edge, if sliced twice into a section. 5-inch shear with 23 teeth may remove 40 percent of hair bulk with one slice. This type of thinning shear offers the most versatility, effective blending, thinning and texturizing for all hair types.
Chunking Shears
"Bulk-Away"
Chunking Shears are used both to remove chunks of hair from the interior of the hair, and to create notches in the end sections of the hair. The result makes the task of removing bulk from coarse, curly or thick hair a lot easier.Thinning shears classified as Chunking or Notching usually have anywhere from 7 to 15 teeth with wider gaps between each tooth. The shears remove 40% to 80% of the hair in one slice, depending on the angle of the cut and length of the shear used. One tip to remember is to use caution when cutting thin or extremely fine hair because wide teeth create distinct lines in the hair which are not able to be easily blended. A good rule of thumb is not use thinning shears excessively. For instance a small, 2 inch section of hair will have plenty of bulk removed without changing the line of the cut with only one pass.
Finishing Shears
For the "Clean" Finish
Finishing Shears remove 10% to 50% of hair bulk and will generally have between 28 to 40 teeth. These are, by far the best thinning shears for blending or removing a small amount of bulk from the hair. Very thin hair is best handled using these type of thinning shears.Finishing shears can be used in many of the same ways as other shears, however the cuts are not as visible due to the teeth being much closer together. If finishing shears are used on course or thick hair will require more passes to give the same effect as chunking shears.
Great Haircuts Start With the Right Tools
Skilled hairstylist can produce great results with a standard pair of cutting shears or a razor, although this method requires more time and effort. As a professional stylist, enjoying a longer career requires caution of long-term repetitive hand motions. Therefore, investing in a few pairs of thinning shears is highly advisable. by MeleeShears
