Choosing A Psychic Reader

Ranked #17,639 in Culture & Society, #359,031 overall

How do you choose a psychic reader that you can trust and believe in?

It's almost the same process you would use to choose a doctor, dentist, or any other person who provides the service of looking after your well-being, with two exceptions: psychics don't acquire degrees that prove their expertise, and, unfortunately, at least on the internet, anyone can hang out a psychic shingle!

So how do you choose the person who will connect you with the psychic world?

You take your time to get to know who you want to go to for advice. Here are the steps for doing this.

Feeling nervous about placing your trust In a psychic?

Good! It will keep you cautious!

Getting to know a psychic is like any other kind of blind date - you would rather do it in full daylight with plenty of people around! That's why the best way to get to know your local psychics is by attending a psychic fair. Take a good long look around before you settle on someone, and don't hesitate to ask somoeone who has just had a reading what they thought. Psychic fairs usually take place in New Age or Metaphsyical shops, so you have time to browse through the many interesting things all around as you also check out the different psychic services. Take your time, relax and enjoy the visit. Then, when you feel you've got a good sense of someone, give it a try.

At one point in time a metaphysical shop owner would ask me to come by and test new psychics taking part in the fair. I had advantages - I could sense ability even before the session began, and in spite of being a psychic, I am also a skeptic. How can that be? Because it's common sense - I need to be shown results before I trust another of my own kind!

Most of the time I found the readers gave what I look for, which is in the list that follows. Just once did I have to tell the owner someone was no good: it was a young woman pretending to be a channeler. She closed her eyes and went into a gravelly fake voice giving all sorts of platitudes. I will give her this: she had enough sense, even with her eyes closed, to know I wasn't buying it. I didn't have to say a word. She finally dropped the act and eyes still closed said "No?" Yep. Nope.

What if there isn't any local psychic fair?

Do what you can to get recommendations before you go. Or ask the psychic to have a talk with you before you make any appointment. Ask the psychic about his or her abilities, what you can expect in a reading, how long he or she has been in business - anything you think will help you get a better feel for their experience. Check them out on the internet if you can. Just remember, psychics can raise the ire of some people just ebcause they are psychics, so if you see some nasty things written about the one you want to see, dig a little deeper, and see if you can find some positive feedback from someone who has used the services.

What do I look for in a psychic?

I am a picky, picky customer - like doctors, a psychic can make the worst client! But then a psychic knows what to look for. This is what I pay attention to:
  1. Someone who is comfortable with people. I like to feel like I am sitting down to chat with a friend I haven't met before. If I get any "stranger" sensation, any mental walls up, I'm not going to sit down. It's not anything against the person, this is just not a good fit for me.

  2. There is no suggestion of acting to impress. I really hate that. I've known even truly gifted psychics to do that and, if I see it, no matter what the gift, they've lost me. Especially...

  3. ...Don't choose someone who claims for his or herself the title "famous," "internationally known," "premier," or anything like that. Others may say it, and if you've heard of the person already, you may know that title has been earned, and that's okay. But when someone just puts out there that they are really, really great, I get the immediate feeling that they really, really, aren't, and I pass them by. Look for someone who has a less inflated vision of self.

  4. Psychic to psychic: I am getting a sense of good clear energy. But most people can pick up on that nice feeling of someone you want to be around. It's very important.

  5. The person is giving a good deal of specific information, without asking a lot of questions or leading me in any way. I don't like the semi-cold reading method, where they ask too much. That doesn't mean I don't want any questions, but I want to know the information is flowing before I add a single thing to the mix.

  6. The person is responsible enough to be tactful. I once had this girl read cards for me - insisting on it when I already had a feeling it was a bad idea - and she cheerfully told me in the middle of the reading that I would marry the love of my life then promptly die! Why thank you...

I'll make an exception though - the best reader I ever had was blunt and tactless too - but he knew he could do that with me. He would know when he could not do it. His bluntness came from the level of comfort we had with each other. If what is said makes you uncomfortable, you have the right to stop the reading.

  7. I need the reading to make sense. The person doesn't have to be right on the money, in fact, a lot of it can be a puzzle (a puzzle that makes sense later!) but it needs to have a certain sense to it, and feel right to me. If it doesn't I will never come back.

  8. If someone tells you you have to do something odd (especially odd and financial) to escape a curse, a fate, a demon or anything else intended to frighten you, get out of there immediately. Don't listen to anyone who talks of such things. They're only interested in controlling you - and your money.

Can you predict how much it will cost?

It depends on the psychic - the better known the higher the price!

Prices can range from around $20-$25 for psychic fair readings, to several hundred for a private reading from a famous psychic.

I once had a complaint from a woman who was horrified that a famous psychic charges several hundred dollars for a reading. I explained that so many people wanted his time, this was best way of making sure that he handled a reasonable amount of requests for the limited amount of time he had for personal readings, between his travel and his needs for his own time. She would not be swayed.

"Jesus wouldn't charge for HIS services!!!"

"Ma'am, I hate to break this to you, but Jesus had bills..."

What are the chances?

Fortune Teller

What are the chances a psychic is correct? On an average, 65 - 70 percent for a good psychic. That's not much better than pure chance! You can't really qualify the results you get with a psychic - you have to go for the quality. You need to feel you are getting information that belongs to you, not just information strung together like a script written on paper and chosen purely by chance.

Do you wish you could see your own future instead?

The one fortune teller you can never ever trust is yourself.

It's impossible, most of the time, to clear the muck of our own fears and expectations out of the way and really see our own future. Once in awhile I manage to, but I always try to argue with what I am sensing! If I have a strong feeling about my future I go check it out with someone else whom I trust.

This just sounded so like a fortune teller's song, I thought you might enjoy the break!
