Chowder recipes for New Englanders are about as plentiful as spaghetti sauce recipe for Italians. Every family is different and there are so many wonderful choices!

This lens features recipes for different types of chowder - the thick and creamy (though not always creamy!) soup that keep us cozy in the winter and inspired in the summer. I suppose I'm a bit biased since I'm from New England, but there are definitely more chowders out there than the traditional "New England Clam Chowder" (though I will say that's probably my favorite). New England vs. Manhattan Clam Chowder

Some people think of the creamy New England clam chowder when they think of clam chowder. Other people think of the tomato-based "Manhattan" clam chowder that's popular as well. Turns out, Manhattan clam chowder isn't from Manhattan at all. It's from Rhode Island! Back in the day when it was first concocted, settlers scoffed at the New Englanders who tossed stewed tomatoes into their chowder, joking that New Yorkers would be the only people crazy enough to do such a thing. Guess it wasn't so crazy afterall given that it's still incredibly popular today!

I've featured the Legal Seafoods cookbook at the top. The chowder recipe is in there as well as tons of other amazing dishes. If I thought I could actually recreate the level of the deliciousness contained in the food from that restaurant in my kitchen, I'd be really excited haha.
