Chris de Burgh - A Musical Storyteller

Chris de Burgh has been a big part of our family's life! I was first introduced to his music by my husband who had been an early fan. His music really grew on me and also our children over the years.

Chris has had a long, successful career and is still touring and recording today. His website shows 17 studio albums, 5 live albums, and 24 compilation albums, while also appearing on 35 other albums!

Best known for the romantic song "The Lady in Red", he is a gifted storyteller with a diverse collection of songs, many with a socially conscience theme, and others that are just plain funny!

I will highlight some of his known and lesser known songs on this page.

Three Reasons to Love Chris de Burgh

He's unique.
He's Irish.
He's a great storyteller.

Spanish Train & Other Stories

1975 Chris de Burgh

This album is probably our all-time favorite of his early work.

The song "Spanish Train" is about a showdown between the devil and God - a classic that my whole family loves. "A Spaceman Came Traveling" is a twist on what happens on Christmas Eve and is one of my husband's favorites. One of my personal favorites is "The Painter" - well, you just have to hear it to believe it. "Patricia the Stripper" was played at our wedding when I took my garter off. It's hilarious, with its most famous line being "God made her a sinner just to make fat men thinner."

Crusader

1979 Chris de Burgh

Another very interesting early album was "Crusader." The title track is the story of Richard, the Lionheart, during the Crusades and ends with the following reflection,

"What do I do now?" said the Wise man to the Fool,
"I have spent my whole life searching, to find the Golden Rule,
Though centuries have disappeared, the memory still remains,
Of those enemies together, could it be that way again?"
Then the Fool said "Oh you Wise men, you really make me laugh,
With your talk of vast persuasion and searching through the past,
There is only greed and evil in the men who fight today,
The song of the Crusader has long since gone away ..."

This album contains some of the best love songs ever written. My favorite is "Something Else Again" that begins,

"Peace and understanding is the wisdom of her world.
She loves without a reason, she gives without a word."

Quiet Revolution

1999 Chris de Burgh

This is one of my favorites of his later albums. His storytelling shines in "Saint Peter's Gate," his sense of humor comes through in "I Want it and I Want it Now!" (about consumerism) and hope and confidence exudes in the lovely ballad "Quiet Revolution."

Another storytelling classic, with songs on the themes of war and relationships. I especially like the song "The Words - I Love You" about the power of those three little words.

Live Albums by Chris de Burgh

One of my dreams is to take my husband to see Chris de Burgh in concert, although his tours are mostly in Europe these days. In the meantime, I rely on these live albums to give me the experience of a live performance.

Update: Chris will be touring Canada in Spring of 2012 and I have tickets to see him in May in Toronto. Don't tell my husband! It's his Christmas present.

I didn't know the story behind "Lady in Red" -- but I do remember it. (Back then I thought his name was Christa Burgh.) Lensrolled to "Listening in on Joshua Kadison".

I think someone gave me the album (on vinyl) of Spanish Train back in the late 1980s or early 90s and I loved it and still love it today. Since then, I bought it on CD. I think he's a clever and witty song writer who also can write very moving songs. I think he's under-rated by some people who dismiss his as another middle of the road singer. Great lens, blessed.

This is a great, well-informed SquidWho on Chris de Burgh, Kim! I have to admit that the only song I know of his is "Lady in Red" but thanks to you, I can now learn more about the talented musician. (:

Chris De Burgh has always been a favourite. Don't Pay the Ferryman would be my pick, but I also have a soft spot for A Spaceman Came Travelling, particularly over the Christmas period. Lensrolled to my Irish Music.

Coming up with a song that's about a showdown between the devil and God is very creative - I didn't know that one, and I liked it when I heard it just now. Actually, the only I did know was lady in red. It's funny though, because now when I hear it I think of Tina Fey's character in the movie Baby Mama (she loved it) *giggle*. Anyhoo, great introduction.
