Christian Alternative Music

Ranked #16,359 in Music, #475,874 overall | Donates to Acumen Fund

If John Hughes or Sophia Coppola made a Christian movie...

...who would be on the soundtrack?

This lens seeks to answer that question!

If 1) you love groups like New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, Erasure, Big Country, U2, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive and Brian Eno and 2) you profess your faith in Jesus Christ, then this lens is for you.

I need your help building the end-all, be-all list of Christian post punk artists.

So let's get started!

Indie Labels That Support Christian Artists

So far, these labels are putting out some great tunes by some great Christian artists. Email me with any I'm missing. And please support the ones you love!
Tooth & Nail Records
Tooth & Nail Records is a record label founded by Brandon Ebel in the U.S. state of California in 1993. The label later moved to Seattle, Washington, where it is situated today.
Plastiq Musiq
Plastiq Musiq is an electronic music record label created by Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric in 1997. It is sometimes referred to as PQMQ for short. Plastiq Musiq shared a partnership with Tooth and Nail Records until it was turned over to Mike Williams in 2005. In July 2007 the company's mail-order system was handed over to Antiphonic Music.
Darla Records
Darla Records is an independent record label founded by James Agren (in 1994) while he was in New York.

The music of the artists on the label is electronica, indie rock, americana as well as other genres. Formed at a time when abrasive music was the norm, Darla was more interested in becoming an outfit with a focus toward the ambient and indie-pop. To this end, the label has collaborated with other underground labels, including LTM, Le Grand Magistery, Audio Dregs Recordings, and Static Discos. Darla Records is now home to over 35 exclusively distributed labels.
A Different Drum
A Different Drum is an independent record label and online store based in the US state of Utah, specializing in synthpop and related genres. The label has released hundreds of albums, singles, and compilations, and is the biggest synthpop label in the U.S.

A Different Drum has also hosted music festivals, focusing both on established label artists and on upcoming, unsigned bands.

Alternative Artists

If I do my job, this list should evolve to feature various artists. For now, here are artists I recommend.
Starflyer 59
Starflyer 59 is an indie rock band from Riverside, California that was founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric.
Joy Electric
Joy Electric is a one-man electropop/synth pop group consisting of Ronnie Martin.
The Brothers Martin
The Brothers Martin is an indie rock band from Riverside, California consisting of brothers Ronnie Martin and Jason Martin. Musically, it incorporates elements of both Joy Electric and Starflyer 59 (Ronnie and Jason's primary music projects, respectively): electropop and shoegazing, while modern rock and 80's New Wave are also a central influence.
The Echoing Green
The Echoing Green is an electronica/synthpop band. It began as a duo between Joey Belville and Aaron Bowman in 1992.
Hammock
Hammock is a two-member post-rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. With music created in between production and songwriting projects over the course of two years, Hammock combines live instrumentation, electronic beats, and droning guitar into atmospheric music similar in style to the work of Boards of Canada, Explosions in the Sky, and Stars of the Lid

Velvet Blue is another label I would add to the list. "The label was started by Jeff Cloud as a way to release artists that were making music that was a bit left of center. Cloud a musician himself (pony express, starflyer 59, joy electric, party people) was always running across great artists who were being over looked, and he decided to do what he could to change this. "

Some of my favorites on the label include: MAP, The Lassie Foundation and The Foxglove Hunt (a collaboration between Fine China's Rob Withem and Joy Electric's Ronnie Martin....the Christian equivalent of New Order),
