WHERE DO I START?

Goals

1. Let's acknowledge whose money it actually is. If we remember that everything belongs to God ~ then we are just the stewards. Much can be said on this deeply spiritual topic and a great book for gaining some perspective on this is
The Treasure Principle
by Randy Alcorn.

2. As stewards, God asks us to manage the money he has given us. Good managers must have a plan ~ a plan for financial freedom ~ otherwise known as a budget!

3. Your budget will become your map to financial freedom. Rather than seeing your spending plan as restrictive and confining, start to see it as a way for you to keep on the road.

BUDGET: YOUR FINANCIAL FREEDOM PLAN

PUT IT IN WRITING!

STEP ONE: LIST MONTHLY EXPENSES

FIXED EXPENSES:

* Giving
* Housing (Mortgage or Rent)
* Property taxes
* Insurance

VARIABLE EXPENSES:

To get an idea of what you are spending on variable expenses, keep an expense diary for 30 days and track all expenditures. It is very eye opening to see where your money is going.

* Food
* Utilities
* Transportation
* Debt Reduction
* Entertainment
* Clothing
* Medical/Dental
* Savings
* Investments
* Miscellaneous

Every Step

STEP TWO: LIST AVAILABLE MONTHLY INCOME

*Salary
*Interest
*Other

If you have a fixed income every month, this part isn't too hard. However, if you live on fluctuating income or are self-employed this area can be more challenging. Make a conservative estimate as to what your annual income is likely to be, divide that number by 12 and then use that figure to develop your monthly budget.

It is easy for people on fluctuating incomes to get trapped in the debt cycle because they spend what they make during the months with higher income instead of paying back what they previously borrowed. A budget will set you free from this trap and allow you to control your money instead of your money controlling you.

HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON WHAT

American Dollar Bill Paper Clipped to Accounting Book

Your working budget should be based on your net income (what is left after tithe and taxes). Financial advisors have developed percentages that serve as guideline for maximum spending in each area. These percentages are based on families with an average income. If your income is higher or lower than the average, the numbers may need to be adjusted accordingly.

33% - HOUSING (including mortgage, utilities, maintenance, insurance and repairs)

10 -15% - FOOD

5% - CLOTHING

15% - TRANSPORTATION (cost of vehicle, fuel, maintenance & insurance)

5% - ENTERTAINMENT/RECREATION

5 - 8% DEBT SERVICE (or less)

5 - 15% SAVING/INVESTING

5 - 8% MEDICAL/DENTAL

    Very cool lense. God started working on my finances a couple of years ago, ending useless spending, whispering as I was about to buy things I didnt need "do you need that?"
    Now I have a bank account with a fair buffer and my giving is way above a tithe - my immediate goal is to be able to give 20-25 percent. I'm on track.

    Thanks, every Christian needs it. I'm lensrolling this to my Gospel Poverty site, because Christians need to be in a position to get out of debt, minimize expenses for the advancement of the Gospel and to help others.

    The "LOVE" of God is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost.That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ the Father of Glory might give unto us "that" Spirit of revelation and wisdom unto the knowledge of Him.That the eyes of our understanding being enlighten;that we might know what is the hope of His calling,what the riches of His glory of His inheritance in the saints.What is the exceding greatness of His power to usward who believe,according to the working of His mighty power.Which He received in Christ when He raised Him from the dead.Set Jesus at His Own right-hand in heavenly places.Far above all principalities,powers,mights,dominions;and every name that is named not only in this world,but also in that which is to come;and put all things under Jesus feet and gave made Him to be "Head" over all things to the church which is His {me & you complete believers}body; the fullness of Him,which fills all-n-all.Romans 5:5; Ephesians1:17-23
