Is there a Christian Halloween?

I used to hate Halloween. As a Christian, I believed that the term Christian Halloween was an oxymoron and any one crazy enough to celebrate this Pagan holiday was a moron.

Every year I would take special care to make sure my pets were safely locked in the house, in case some sicko weirdo decided to use them in some strange satanic ritual. Shades were drawn and lights turned out to discourage any celebrates from coming to MY door. Prayers were offered to protect little children and condemn those ignorant adults who would dare to inflict such evil on their own child.

I thought God would be pleased to see me take such a stand against evil.

Yeah! Stupid Halloween

At least that's what I thought for years

Thank God! I finally woke up to see that Halloween is such a great opportunity for evangelism. What other time of year do people actually flock to my door? Children come for candy, neighbors are outside just waiting for someone to say a few nice words. You get to decorate you house with strange colored fruits and vegetables. It's the only time of year where it's perfectly acceptable to hang dried up corn stalks next to your front door.

Now I stock up not only on bags of candy, but also Christian Tracts and pens with Christian messages. I include a little witness card or "Jesus loves you" mini bears. Anything that will get the message out.

If you're really adventurous you might try dressing up in a Bible Costume, going door to door and handing out your Bible tracks and Witness pens. You could even have the kids make their own tracks with simple messages like "Jesus loves you and I do too". One year we dressed up like farmers and handed out little pieces of paper with scripture verses. We were the Sower that sows the word. My young son had fun making his own "seedwords".

Halloween doesn't seem so "Stupid" to me anymore it's becoming one of my favorite nights of the year and can be your favorite too. Open the shades, turn on the lights, say a few prayers and get out there, rejoice and share the joy of the Lord.

Halloween Evangelism

If you can send your kids to my door dressed like witches and devils, then I can answer my door dressed like Jesus. If you can give my kid candy wrapped in demonic symbols then I can give your kid a Jesus loves you teddy bear. Fair is fair:)

Last year I literally got hate mail for writing about Christians and Halloween. This time you can sound off here and spare the emails.

Should Christians celebrate Halloween

Yes

NanLT says:

Certainly, if that is your desire. In the same way that I celebrate Samhain and honor those in my family who have died each year at this time. Of course, as a Christian instead of celebrating the Feast of All Hallow's Eve, you could choose to celebrate All Saint's Night.

heather says:

Sorry, in my earlier post i gave the wrong reference...the scripture is actually Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

heather says:

I don't like the spirit behind Halloween...all of the death and demonic turns my stomach. But I have always been taught that when we are facing something from the enemy, that we should move in the opposite Spirit(the Spirit of God). For example if someone is hateful toward us we respond with love. I feel the same about Halloween. Why not come against the darkness with light? I think it would be awesome if churches would dress up like really cool things like pirates etc then set up a booth in the downtown area of their city on Trick or treat day. the booth could
mimic a fortune teller booth (wothout the crystal ball and other yuck, of course)...but we could have a sign that reads..come get your future told for free. then when people approach we could give them words about their destinies (Jer 27:11 for example) and tell them how much they are loved by God, or share a specific word God gives us for them....and hand out candy, of course. I think this would invade the enemy's territry more than avaiding the day and letting him have free reign. Just a thought.

amy says:

I feel that Halloween has been around for a very long time and children are children. They enjoy the candy and having fun. If you are strong in your faith then I see no reason why it isn't alright to to hand out candy for the kids and send out tracts. My church is doing just that this Friday night along with trunk or treat and a fall festival. After all, any way that you can show god's love to children in big ways is great. Kids are kids. You can't take away the holiday, but you can provide a safe haven for children that night where they can have fun, learn some about christ, and get love where they normally don't have it!

Mr Dave says:

There are christian alternatives to the pagan holiday. Dress up as a saint for halloween! Go to http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1065732/ten_ideas_for_halloween_costumes_of.html?cat=74 to read an article I wrote and published about how to make halloween costumes of saints. I think that this idea of dressing up as a saint for Halloween is a good opportunity to witness to the faith in a pagan culture. To read my article, visit http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1065732/ten_ideas_for_halloween_costumes_of.html?cat=74 Hope you will enjoy the ideas.

No

joseph says:

Witchcraft, sorcery, etc are heavily condemned in the bible. Eph 5:11 tells us not to take part in the unfruitful works of darkness but instead expose them. Halloween celebrates all things wicked.

Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm says:

I hate it when I hear Christians celebrating Halloween, even if it is for witnessing. If God is leading you to do that, then that is between you and God, but other then that, we should have NOTHING to do with it.

What do you think about Christian Halloween?

When I first wrote this article for my Blog, I received some pretty nasty response.. If you disagree or have had a "bad experience" with "Christians", please feel free to leave your comments but I do ask that you be civil.

I invite you to continue making great lenses like this. You may be wimpy about witnessing, but you do very well with writing.

I honestly prefer to celebrate Halloween than... The Day Of The Death... and plan to organize a great Halloween party next year in my village.
    Happy Halloween!
