Grains of sand in your mind that irritate you long enough that they become pearls . . .
A list of top podcasts for thinking Christians. The criteria for making the list is that a 'cast must:
1. Be distinctively Christian.
2. Be original--No radio rebroadcasts allowed!
3. Have above average to excellent production quality
4. Put grains of sand in your mind that irritate you long enough that eventually they become pearls.
*In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the president and co-founder of wiredparish.com, which produces several of the 'casts listed in this lens.
Links to the Top Ten 'Casts
- Brian McLaren
- I love Brian because he asks such wonderful questions. I don't always agree with the answers he arrives at, but darn it if he isn't one of the best question-askers of all time.
- The Internet Monk
- Provides weekly commentary on news, books, and theology from a post-evangelical perspective. It's 15-20 minutes of, well, just really interesting commentary.
I dig listening to him because a) he's to the point--no rambling and b) we seem to see the world from very similar vantage points. - Reggie McNeal
- Reggie drops 15 minutes a week of outstanding commentary on doing ministry in shifting culture. He is in-your-face, but his humor and South Carolina accent keep you from realizing it.
- Philosophy and Pop Culture
- Kyle Johnson's 'cast is extremely unique since it's one of the few philosophy 'casts out there. (Definitely one of the only ones being done by someone who actually has a PhD in Philosophy.)
Plus, he approaches philosophy as a Christian. He's extremely clear, very insightful, and wonderfully easy to listen to.
(Plus, I co-host it, which makes it ridiculously good. :) ) - Rob Bell/Mars Hill Bible Church
- One of the only three 'preaching' 'casts on the list. Rob's simply one of the most original speakers I've ever heard.
- Third Way Faith
- Shane Hipps speaks mainly on the effects of electronic media on culture and our faith. I read his book before I listened to his 'cast. I was blown away by the book, but I was absolutely floored by his 'cast. I RARELY listen to 'casts multiple times--his is a welcome exception.
- John Piper
- Piper is extremely interesting as a speaker because he manages to draw a very young audience while at the same time being fairly dense in his content. Unabashedly reformed in his theology. You'll most likely find points of disagreement with him, but God bless him for being clear enough that you can actually tell where you disagree!
- Mike Erre/Rock Harbor Church
- The third of the 'preaching' 'casts on the list. Mike's the author of 'The Jesus of Suburbia.' He's extremely dynamic and thoughtful. Great combination.
