It's a Wonderful Life On Blu-ray

The Original Black & White Trailer For It's A Wonderful Life

It's a Wonderful Life Blu-ray (1946)

Starring: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell and Henry Travers Director: Frank Capra

It's A Wonderful Life was almost lost and totally forgotten for years because of a copyright issue. In the 1970s, airings on television brought it back to the public and to popularity. The story line, in case you do not know it, is that of an angel who arrives to show George a vision. The film depicts an "American dream gone bad" and tells of the trials and tribulations of life but also of the importance of friendship and achievement. Not a hit when it was originally released, it "weaves a special magic" with today's audiences.

The contents of the It's A Wonderful Life blu-ray set include the black and white and colorized versions of the movie, The Making of It's A Wonderful Life and the original theatrical trailer in HD.

It's A Wonderful Life Blu-ray Movie Reviews

It's A Wonderful Life Blu-ray Review by High-Def Digest
"'It's A Wonderful Life' may be a cinema antique, but its emotional power remains as vital and visceral today as it certainly must have been back in 1946. Few films engender such unabashed affection or appeal to such a wide-ranging audience, and this Blu-ray edition, with its superior video and clean audio, is a welcome Christmas present for those who have seen this classic 100 times or not at all. Supplements are a bit thin for such a major title, but such skimping can't dull my enthusiasm for this first-class presentation of an essential American film. Highly recommended any season of the year."

It's A Wonderful Life Blu-ray Movie Review By DVD Talk
"Paramount's 2-Disc Blu-ray of It's a Wonderful Life is a fine and highly-recommended disc -- the HD far outpaces a good 16mm print for image quality and the audio probably equals or betters the optical tracks from 1946."

It's a Wonderful Life Blu-ray Review from Bluray.com
"Paramount's Blu-ray release of It's a Wonderful Life is itself wonderful. Though it sadly lacks a more robust supplemental section, it does offer a stunning picture quality (and the inclusion of a colorized version for those so inclined) and a monaural soundtrack that does all that's needed of it. For those that have seen It's a Wonderful Life dozens of times and newcomers alike, Paramount's Blu-ray release of this all-time cinema classic comes highly recommended."

A Christmas Carol on Blu-ray

A Christmas Carol (1951)

Starring: Alastair Sim, Jack Warner, Kathleen Harrison and Mervyn Johns.

Photobucket

For the first time ever on blu-ray, the best-known and most acclaimed version of Charles Dickens' story. Featuring an excellent performance by Alastair Sim and the rest of the cast, the 1951 filmed version is most definitely my favorite. This is the classic English version, recommended for individuals six years old and up.

This movie will feature a high-definition film transfer with digitally restored picture and sound. Special features include optional English or Spanish subtitles, Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1, audio commentary by George Cole, biographies of cast members and a standard DVD.

Promises to be a classic movie that you won't want to miss on blu-ray!

A Christmas Carol (1952) Blu-ray Movie Reviews

A Christmas Carol Blu-ray From Blu-ray.com
"t's never really Christmas without some version of A Christmas Carol. Viewers have so many choices with this source material that it would be arrogant for me to deign which is the best. But a lot of fans have maintained this is certainly one of the best, if not the all-time champ, and I certainly wouldn't argue with that. This Blu-ray offers a nice upgrade in image quality, if also troublesome audio, but if you're a fan of this version, you'll most likely be thrilled and won't be too prone to shout, "Bah, humbug!"

A Christmas Carol Blu-ray review From DVDTown
"A Christmas Carol" is a holiday tradition. If viewed each season along with "It's a Wonderful Life," "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947), and "A Christmas Story," I guarantee there won't be a dry eye in the house afterwards or a bad vibe for the rest of the year. I could hardly recommend a film more highly, especially now with its beautiful Blu-ray picture.

A Christmas Carol Blu-ray Review by DVD Talk Review
"This version of A Christmas Carol is going to find itself spinning in my Blu-ray player every year around this time, and frankly, I'm sorry I waited so long to see it. With new versions of the classic Dickens' tale spewing out of Hollywood too often to keep track of, it's nice to know there's at least one version out there that gets it right."

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Starring Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn, Natalie Wood and Gene Lockhart.

Photobucket

Miracle on 34th Street features one department store Santa who turns out to be the real Santa who just happened to get himself hired at Macy's. His wonderful spirit and his magic change the lives of the people around him, including one special little girl and her mother.

This blu-ray movie was released on blu-ray on October 6th, 2009 to mixed reviews. Apparently, information about this blu-ray indicates that it contains a colorized version and it does not so if having a colorized version is important to you, do not buy the blu-ray version. Many people, however, really prefer the black and white version.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"...this is the best presentation this movie will ever be because of the age of the movie. It beats the DVD, which is enough to prompt me to buy the Blu-ray." ~~ Doc Ostrow

The 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street was released on the same day as the original movie. It is generally accepted to be a nice movie although not quite as good as the original. I have chosen, therefore, not to feature it on this page of movie classics but if it is the 1994 version you are after, you can read more about by clicking right here.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Blu-ray Movie Reviews

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Blu-ray Review from DVD Talk
"Seven decades haven't dimmed Miracle on 34th Street's wit and heartwarming charm in the slightest. The Blu-ray, both in terms of the image quality and the supplements, is slightly but not greatly disappointing and overall this is Highly Recommended."

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Blu-ray Review from High-Def Digest
"With its bright outlook, inspired script, and first-rate performances, the original 'Miracle on 34th Street' remains one of Hollywood's all-time great Christmas films. The video and audio quality on this Blu-ray disc won't dazzle you, but they're enough of a step up from DVD to make a double dip worthwhile - unless, of course, you just can't part with your colorized version. (And if that's the case, I don't want to know about it.) Even without pristine picture and sound, however, this timeless film deserves a spot on every film lover's shelf. Santa would put coal in my stocking if I didn't recommend it."

" I really can't imagine Miracle on 34th Street sounding much better than this."

A Charlie Brown Christmas On Blu-ray

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Starring Ann Altieri and Chris Doran.

Photobucket

A Charlie Brown Christmas may well be the best of the Charlie Brown television specials. It is certainly a classic that millions of people watch every single year and now you can do so on blu-ray disc. A wonderful story that helps us think about what is special about the Christmas season. Recommended for children three years of age and up.

Kenneth Brown of bluray.com says, "A Charlie Brown Christmas has never looked better." It features an excellent video transfer and he goes on to say that, it has "deeper blacks, more brilliant colors, crisper lines, and a more technically proficient image."

This blu-ray set includes two specials, A Christmas Miracle which is a look at the creation of this A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown a Peanuts holiday special.

The makers of A Charlie Brown Christmas thought they had a show that was going to flop. They were thrilled and shocked when it premiered with high ratings and excellent reviews. Today, A Charlie Brown Christmas is the second longest-running Christmas special on U.S. television.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Original Sound Track Recording Of The CBS Television Special

A most amazing, nostalgic holiday jazz recording.

Listen to this original 1965 soundtrack and you will be transported back to the first time you saw this television special. Once you've listened a few times, you will appreciate Vincent Guaraldi's piano playing talents. I have included the picture of and the link to the collector's edition but this CD is available in many versions. You can see all of the versions available at Amazon by clicking right here.

"Buy it for the nostalgia -- keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection."

How The Grinch Stole Christmas Blu-ray

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1965)

Starring Boris Karloff, Thurl Ravenscroft and June Foray

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a wonderfully charming classic, a holiday staple. Another story that reminds us of what is important at Christmas, this one is recommended for children five years of age and up.

There is some controversy about how bright the Grinch's green fur is in the blu-ray version but Kenneth Brown of blu-ray.com contends that "the television special's original animation cells prove Warner's 1080p/VC-1 transfer is a faithful representation of its animators' choices and intentions. Colors are rich and rewarding (yep, even the greens), blacks are suitably inky, contrast is gorgeous, and Chuck Jones' lineart is crisper than it's ever been."
