Hallmark's The Christmas Box Movie Review (Richard Thomas)

The Christmas Box Reminds Us That Giving Is The Greatest Gift of All

Many years ago, I read and loved the book The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans. It wasn't until recently that I discovered there had been a Hallmark Home Entertainment movie made from the book and once I did discover that fact, it took a bit of time to put my hands on a copy of the movie.

The Christmas Box has been released on DVD in tandem with the prequel movie, Timepiece. However, that double feature must have been discontinued because it is an expensive DVD. If you want to save a bit of money and you still have the capability to view a VHS videotape that is definitely the way to go. That is what I found, a copy of the movie on VHS, and I was able to enjoy this movie at a reasonable price.

This page is dedicated to the 1995 Hallmark Christmas movie, which stars Richard Thomas, Maureen O'Hara and Annette O'Toole. You will find more information about the movie as well as information about the book and the music CD, any of which I believe would make a wonderful Christmas gift when bundled with a copy of this rare movie.

You will not, however, find a copy of the movie trailer on this page. Since I was unable to find one, I have included a copy of the beautiful news segment about the story behind the book. No doubt it will have you wanting to read the book and watch the movie, if you have not already done so.

"I cringe at using the term heart-warming, but it's a term that describes this film well. Easy to enjoy this one." ~ C.J. Leach

The Christmas Box Description

From the VHS videotape box.

"Richard, Keri and six-year-old Jenna are a loving family helping to make ends meet by acting as caretakers in an apartment building as Richard starts his brand new business. Keri learns about another caretaking position in one of the grand old homes in town and persuades Richard to accompany her on the interview. Although stately homeowner Mary Parkin seems a bit aloof, she likes the young couple and offers them the position.

Keri, Jenna and Mary become good friends but Richard spends long hours hard at work and grows more distant. When he finds an exquisitely carved Christmas box tucked away in the attic, containing letters that reveal a surprising clue to Mary's past, a bond of affection finally develops between them. In the busy weeks before the holidays, Richard learns a valuable lesson from Mary - about the true meaning of Christmas and the special bond that a family shares."

The Story Behind The Christmas Box

Unfortunately, there is no movie trailer available for The Christmas Box. However, there is this very lovely video of the story behind the book.

Amazon Customer Review

"Though this was, I believe, a made-for-TV event, it is probably my favorite Christmas movie. The story tugs at the heartstrings...strings that need tugging now and again. The story is engaging, and the sentiments ring true to today's over-commercialization of Christmas." ~ Alan R. Holyoak

The Christmas Box Book

By Richard Paul Evans

Richard Paul Evans wrote The Christmas Box for his daughters and never meant for it to be a widely published book. He self-published it in a limited quantity in 1994 but the book quickly gained international attention and went on to become a bestseller. As Amazon says, this is an unusual story filled with truth and emotion and that "Evans reminds the reader that the only way that we can genuinely love one another is by accepting the greatest gift of love ever given -- that of a Father who "so loved His children that He sent His son, that we might someday return to Him." A more simple message to take away is to love your children while you have them.

AN AMAZING AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"Thirty minutes ago, I finished reading this to my children (all in one sitting!) My four-year old fell asleep, but the other two kids kept telling me, "Just one more chapter!" During the last chapter or two, we all started crying and couldn't stop. At times, I could barely read the words through my sobbing. It is such a POWERFUL story of love. Even though young children may get bored with the first few chapters, keep reading with them. By the end of the fourth chapter, they will be begging you not to stop reading. They have asked me to buy them each a book of their own. I plan to do so, so that they may share this beautiful story someday with their own children. I'm sure that my family now has a new Christmas tradition: reading aloud The Christmas Box. ~ Robin

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"Paul Cardill's music has captured magnificently the spirit of Richard Paul Evans' book of the same name. The blend of traditional and original is uniquely beautiful and only enhances the reading of the book. I love the book and music so much that I have given them as Christmas gifts for several years, and each recipient echoes my sentiments. Thank you, Mr. Cardill and Mr. Evans, for creating something so special. It's a shame that the CD is no longer available." ~ A Customer

Richard Paul Evans included a lesson for all parents in The Christmas Box and that is to make the most of the time you have with your children because they won't be children forever...does that message ring true with you? Have you read the book or seen the movie? What did you think?

This is a lovely film. Maureen O'Hara is one of my favorite actresses, but the whole cast is great. I've read the book a couple of times too. Happy new year!
