When I was a twirler (majorette) in High School, we actually had to go door-to-door selling holiday fruit cakes as a fundraiser. Talk about a tough way to go! ha ha! I personally do NOT like fruitcake, but my hubby loves them - at least the way his family makes them. Great lens! :) Kath

Fruitcake is not a tradition in my family, but it does remind me of the Christmas's I spent in Romania ;) Now I know where to go if I ever need a recipe. *Blessed*

I quest-liked this lens not because anyone who is brave enough to attempt to change my mind about fruitcake deserves to be acknowledged but because Jaguar Julie's fruitcake recipe lens has won me over!

I enjoy fruitcake most of the time, however sometimes the store bought ones will have this orange-yellow colored fake fruit that tastes awful and it just spoils it for me. Sometimes I try to pick these pieces out. Way better is to have a homemade one from someone like you. Thanks for sharing the recipe and some great books too.
    Happy holidays!

I love fruitcake! The more candied cherries and nuts in it, the better! And I like to spread a little margarine on a slice as well.
  • John_Michael Nov 19, 2011 @ 10:15 pm | delete
My mother makes a "blonde" fruitcake that is to die for... pineapple, cherries and pecans.

I love fruitcake and used to make 2 or 3 every September, wrap them in wax paper, put them in a special metal tin and let them cure until December. I've tried the cakes from the store and they are terrible. It is no wonder people are turned off of them. The fruit is crazy high-priced and my family don't like them as much as I do. I think that my liking them comes from a tradition that our family had. Too long to tell about here but I did mention it in my Maid of the Mist lens. Not a ploy to get you there!!
Congratulations on getting the purple star for this. I am not surprised.
  • LiliLove Nov 16, 2011 @ 6:48 pm | delete

My mom used to make it when I was a kid growing up in Britain, I didn't mind it if it had marzipan on it :) then they would have it with cheese and Port or Sherry at New Years.

I'm okay with fruitcake, but I love my mom's. She makes it in November right after Thanksgiving and wraps it in cheesecloth and stores it in a steaming kettle for a month. Each day, she pours a bottle of brandy or rum (usually alternating) and lets it soak in. Believe it or not, it's only moist after a month of this. There is so much liquor in this fruit cake, you can get drunk just off the fumes. The kids are NOT allowed to have it. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

I don't have any fond fruitcake memories as a child. To my knowledge my parents never bought a fruitcake. I had my first fruitcake when I was an adult and, particularly after I was married, I buy a fruitcake every year during the holidays. I enjoy them and I can't understand why actors in movies or tv shows always put them down. Same with meatloaf and spam. I love them also. Great lens. I will have to try some of your recipes. They look absolutely delicious. Thanks.
  • SouthernPatriots Dec 26, 2010 @ 3:51 am | delete
When we were young children we thought fruit cakes were to be sliced with a sharp cleaver and then the slices used to throw around and use for various purposes, except eating. As adults we began to research fruit cakes (along with other dishes) and found we could make delicious and moist fruit cakes which family and friends love. Thank God, we do not receive fruit cakes as gifts, but give them as gifts to others and receive rave testimonials.
  • kiwisoutback Dec 23, 2010 @ 9:38 pm | delete
My grandmother in law always makes fruitcake around the holidays. Hers was good, others I have had -- not so good. I wouldn't mind getting a fruit cake from her, but from other people I might cringe.
  • purplelady Dec 23, 2010 @ 5:46 pm | delete
I am not a Christmas Fruitcake fan. I don't like the dried fruits. But my ex-Mother-in-law fixed a non-traditional fruitcake many years ago and I loved it. It was made by replacing the dried fruit with gumdrops. I am featured your Christmas Fruitcake on my Christmas Gum Drop cake new lens. Hope you will check it out.

I admit your fruitcake photos make it look quite moist and yummy. Not much of a fruit cake lover but my mom loves the stuff. So maybe try and bake one up quick. Hmm.

I've never understood the bad rap that fruitcake gets! My mother, cousin and I always enjoyed fruitcake at Christmas. My mother had a simple recipe that was good. The rest of the family didn't like it; so we got it all! Your recipes look great!

I actually really enjoy fruitcake. It's too bad they have been the brunt of jokes in recent years. A good one is a very enjoyable holiday treat. A bad one can be used as a doorstop. Nicely done lens...lensrolled to my "Glogg" lens. Another wonderful holiday tradition.

My grandmother used to make fruitcake every year (still does, I suppose, but I live too far away to get it) and send a chunk to us. It was wonderful! Thick, dark and so full of rum you practically got drunk off it. And, when my other grandmother was still alive, she would send us one that was completely the opposite, light, fluffy, barely any alcohol and full of huge chunks of fruit. :) I want to make some, but never remember in time!

I love fruitcake this time of year, and used to buy one from Williams & Sonoma that was made by monks. I'm not sure if they still make it, but it was an annual fundraiser for the monastery. It was pretty tasty fruitcake too!
  • Kimboo Dec 14, 2009 @ 7:43 am | delete
Fruitcake is given a bad rap due to all of the terrible, commercially processed ones sold at stores for 3 dollars. Try a really good home made one and you will fall in love with fruitcake! I also love Buffet's song, Fruitcakes!!!!!! My favorite.

Trust me here people, if you want to discover why fruitcake used to be treasured we need to trash all of our recipes with those horrid green cherries. Yuck!

THIS is the best, yummiest recipe for REAL fruitcake, basted with bourbon and filled with yummy fruit and cake. SOooooo good!

Just finished wrapping up my 2nd batch of fruitcake last week to let them age a bit. I learned from you to use a 300 degree oven, my husband's aunt didn't provide a temp, so I was using 350! These are the prettiest ever--Tipi already ate one from the first batch & is waiting for another one--she's a little, tiney thing & can afford the calories while it's best that I just smell them! Hope you are enjoying your retirement.

Hubby loves Claxton's! Thank goodness! I made 7 fruitcakes one year. Crossed that off my list of experiences! lol They were good, but much much work! Pretty lens! Even if one does not eat fruitcake, it is pretty and it smells so good in the oven! Yum!

I have to say that I am not at all enamored with North American fruit cake, now British fruit cake, that's a whole other story, love it! Love the icing, love the marzipan, love the currents. Could eat the whole thing all by myself.

    Thanks for the lens.

I only ever eat fruit cake at Christmas time - and that is only because I have to do that to get the icing from the traditional British Christmas cake. My Mum only used to let me have the icing if I had the cake and I think my guilt has stuck with me!
  • Susan52 Nov 5, 2008 @ 6:46 pm | delete
My husband loves fruitcake and looks forward to one every year. I've never made one, never in all our years of marriage (imagine that). This year, I think I'll make him one using your Bourbon Fruitcake recipe. It sounds good - lots of nuts, not a lot of fruit, which is my favorite kind of fruitcake (light on the fruit = nut cake?). Anyway, great job on the lens! SquidAngel blessings from me to you for helping solve a gift-giving problem this year!
  • jeffwend Oct 23, 2008 @ 11:30 pm | delete
It looks good. I know I am biased, but I have to say that my Mom still makes the best fruitcake ever.
  • Shelly Oct 22, 2008 @ 11:09 am | delete
Hi--my sister Tipi, sent me over to food to check out a lens and I found you. Many fruitcakes aren't worth eating. I've found the secrete to making them all taste good--coconut rum. I soak the fruit in it and drizzle the cakes with it before wrapping with brandied cheesecloth. Do the drizzle and wrap to an ohum cake and let it sit a few days and suddenly it is delicious! Personally, I don't know if anything can help a cake with citron, but each to his own. I first started making fruitcake 4 years ago after getting my husband's aunt's recipe--she didn't list the alcohol, I got lucky my first try--very popular with family.

Yummy...I'm almost drooling now! Of course, in the UK (and elsewhere for all I know) traditional wedding cakes would be 2 or more tiers, with the top tier being saved for the couples first child's christening. the same recipe would be used in families for wedding and christmas cakes. lensrolled to 'christmas crackers' :)

I'll confess, I've never tried it. I've only heard the jokes and negative comments. My guess is that it's pretty good when it's homemade. Maybe I'll get brave this year!

Here in the UK almost everybody has a fruitcake for Christmas and birthdays. I quite like it occasionally. As for a pitiful gift, the cost of making the best fruitcakes really mounts up with all the fruit and nuts, let alone hours in a low oven to bake it with rising energy costs.
  • JustBon-Crochet-Designs Oct 19, 2008 @ 10:57 am | delete
My hubby's a Brit, and it is a tradition over there to have Christmas Cake, essentially a fruitcake covered with a layer of marzipan and then white icing (to give it a Christmassy, snowy look). His mom makes it every year and it's one of the things he misses about Christmas, now living in the US. Great lens. 5*s
