Ha! My nine year old daughter came from school two days ago with this great craft to show us and it was the exact paper star you're showing below these comments. I was happy to see now that there's at least one thing I do know how to make :) OK, popcorn is easy too, but my teen daughter and I would eat everything before it would even come close to the Christmas tree :) Great lens!

The tree is very eco-friendly: I keep (and ask people I know) to keep all broken (or those they don't want to wear) bead necklaces, so I use many of them in the tree this year. The tree topper is made by my 4 years old with recycle cards and toilet paper roll. There is also an assortment of key chains (for some reason my husband's grand-mother had a huge box of them). The only thing not recycle is some vintage glass ornaments and a LED light garland (really can't have a tree with no lights, but we open it only at night for my son).

I you give gift cards, you can save on wrapping paper which would likely just be thrown away, anyway.
  • JziE Nov 3, 2011 @ 1:09 am | delete
you can save a lot whit this
  • scarlettohairy Nov 1, 2011 @ 12:34 pm | delete
I want to make one (or more) of the Christmas card baskets. I have an older box with a lid made from Christmas cards. It's wonderful!

Wonderful ideas beautifully presented. Blessed! I am adding this article to my go green for Christmas article.

A really lovely lens! I love anything that is eco-friendly, and when it involves getting creative, even better! Nice work :D
  • Pinkchic18 Feb 18, 2011 @ 9:46 am | delete
Very good ideas here! I never knew you could iron wrapping paper. There is some out now that is so flimsy though, I wonder if it wouldn't be hazardous. When I was small, I used to wrap gifts in towels. I still get teased to this day, however it was very eco-friendly! Great lens, blessed by an angel!

We have already gathered all the things that we can reuse and form into beautiful Christmas cards. If we are lucky, we could make more out of it.

I love to make gifts from recycled goods. My daughter is the queen of remade gifts, and each one is a work of love that's treasured.
  • vallain Dec 5, 2010 @ 11:30 am | delete
My mom tells of making paper chains using strips cut from colorful magazine ad pages. This was back in the 1930s. Would work fine today too.

I am recycling some great books to give as gifts. I save paper too! And remember stringing popcorn and cranberries at Christmastime. Homemade gifts can be the best - - you see them in boutiques all the time! I liked this lens a lot. It's great, and has so many good ideas in it.

These recycle green Christmas ideas are so close to my heart. No matter how much money I have or don't have I love making things for gifts. Most of the time I use what I find in nature...very rarely do I make anything from textiles or paper. Blessed by an Angel :)

Congrats on a wonderful lens. I am coming back to this page to get patterns and ideas for this Christmas for sure.

Great lens. Yes, I knew that you can iron wrapping paper. I iron our tissue wrapping paper all of the time because it just kills me to throw it out. It looks just like new! Great lens... again!

I thoroughly enjoyed this peek into your childhood Christmas activities. They have much in common with my mother's memories in my Old-Fashioned Christmas lens (so I've lensrolled it to that one). Her childhood was in the 1930s.
Also linked it to my Have a Thrifty Christmas.

What is it about grandmas and Christmas? :) I was just thinking about those crocheted christmas card baskets. I've lensrolled this to my Make a Paper Ornament lens which was inspired by my grandma and uses recycled wrapping paper. 5*

nice lens, so much ideas, eco-friendly and saves money too. i like the Christmas cutout gifts. I already done the splatter paint. Its fun to combine colors.

oh, i also remember, you can also use a white string (those for crochet) dip it on paint or watercolor. Then put on top of your paper or card, form it into an "S" sign (or experiment for new outcomes). Cover it with a scratch paper. i mean you should add a scratch paper on top, so its card/paper then top is string and top of it is the scratch paper. And press the scratch paper with your hand while your other hand holds the end of the string. Then pull the string as your other hand put weight on the scratch paper. So when you take off the scratch paper you would have a "flower-like" design on your card.

sorry but because this lense doesn't donate at least 50% of its revenue to charity, i sadly can't include it in my group :(
  • Dec 1, 2008 @ 9:11 am | delete
I have already done the Splatter Paint and Stripes Painting in making a gift wrapper. Pretty cool and saves me money.
  • groovyoldlady Nov 28, 2008 @ 6:36 am | delete
This isn't really a "homeschool" lens, but it has so many wonderful, creative ideas that I just have to include it in Happy at a Home.

I especially like the Christmas card baskets!

Just one correction dear: In your debate question you write "you children" instead of "your children". Just thought you'd like to know!

  • pmolinero Nov 16, 2008 @ 8:08 am | delete
It is not just about being eco-friendly, crafting your own Christmas decoration and presents is also very educative for children and they have a lot of fun doing this. Welcome to the Christmas decorations group.
