Christmas 2008 Shopping for Horror Fans
Too many Christmas gift guides list the classics - but most horror fans already own those! You need a list of new items, and that's exactly what this essential Christmas gift guide gives you. The majority of items were released in 2008.
This guide is tailored so that people who know nothing about horror can easily pick out the perfect gift. For each DVD, the first thing I provide is the release date followed by the type of horror movie it is. This makes it easier for you to figure out what your giftee will enjoy. If you know they love sci-fi or zombies or slasher films, you can easily scan the list and see what they'll like.
If you're looking for holiday items, the list starts off with some fun Christmas-themed items, like headless Gingerbread Men cookie cutters and evil snowman movies. Then there are cuddly plush toys and cozy, monster-related plush slippers--great for keeping feet warm during the cold winter
Next are the DVDs, which are categorized by type. You can look at the newest mainstream releases, Asian movies, Blu-ray releases, etc. The horror titles are listed in the order they were released, from newest to oldest. Throughout the guide I highlight movies and TV shows that I personally recommend.
The most family-friendly movie on the list is Young Frankenstein, with a rating of PG. The X-Files TV series and the Angel TV series are probably okay for middle schoolers and up.
At the end of my DVD list are the older horror DVDs I mention: Young Frankenstein, Lake Placid, Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV Series, Seven, and Hostel.
After the DVDs are more fun items to play with: toys (like an Aliens facehugger plush and a Buffy-themed Ouija board), illustrated books and "survival guides," and video games.
Happy shopping!

A traumatized Billy Chapman dresses up as Santa to become an axe murderer. This movie was controversial when it came out in the 80s because parents didn't like that it had a homicidal Santa Clause. The DVD has the uncut, uncensored version, so it's touted as being extremely shocking.

Santa's Slay

It's a killer snowman. Yes, really. His nemesis is "Sheriff Sam," and Jack Frost goes to a Caribbean island to find him. Hopefully by now you can tell this is very ridiculous and made for laughs.

Suspiria (2-Disc Special Edition)
Amazon Price: $12.99 (as of 12/07/2008)
Released Sep 2007 - witchcraft
I think this is Dario Argento's best movie and it's one of my favorite horror films. While the plot is weak, Argento is a master of suspense. With a creepy soundtrack and haunting visuals, this is a classic that many people in the film industry consider the scariest movie ever made.
Suspiria influenced a lot of American directors. All horror fans need this movie.

Based on the Silent Hill video game, I immediately fell in love with this movie. It has the haunting atmosphere and unnerving creatures that make the games so creepy. Not to be missed!

Recommended: Ichi the Killer
Amazon Price: $31.49 (as of 12/07/2008)
Released May 2007 - Japanese, slasher
Ichi the Killer is filled with blood and insanity. This version of the packaging is super fun: it's a "blood pack," so the case is all squishy and entertaining to play with.

New Asian Horror Movie DVD Releases (2008/2007)
Voice
Released July 2008 - Korean, NOT GORY
This is part of the famous Haunted School anthology and has been getting some of the best reviews of any recent Asian horror film. The only gory part of this movie is the American cover art. Like the other Haunted School films, Voice is about suspense. The script, the cinematography, the characters, and the atmosphere are all extremely well done.
This is a beautiful film and not to be passed up.
Hair Extensions (EXTE): Special Edition
Released July 2008 - Japanese
This movie stars the popular Chiaki Kuriyama, known in America for playing Gogo Yubari, the schoolgirl Yakuza bodyguard from Kill Bill Volume 1. Don't let the strange premise of cursed hair extensions fool you; this movie features graphically creepy scenes and killer storytelling.
The Machine Girl
Released June 2008 - Japanese, action, campy
This is an over-the-top, campy gorefest, full of blood and carnage. Ami is a schoolgirl who loses her arm and replaces it with a machine gun. There are decapitations, a flying guillotine, a chainsaw, and even a drill bra. This is one creatively crazy film.
Noriko's Dinner Table

The Host (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Released July 2007 - Korean, sci-fi, monster movie
The Host, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, is constantly recommended as THE Asian horror movie to watch. It's the story of a family trying to find their daughter, but one of the best features of the movie is the amazing creature design.
Recommended: Battle Royale
Amazon Price: $41.99 (as of 12/07/2008)
Released May 2007 - Japanese, action thriller
Blood Royale is more than just an action horror film. It takes an unsettling look at society and will haunt the viewer long after it's over. Before it was released in America, people were importing it from Asia. It's considered by many to be one of the best and most disturbing movies ever made.
I love Battle Royale. The peppy instructional video is one of the funniest scenes ever.
This set comes with the first movie as well as the sequel.
Recent Asian Horror Movie DVD Releases (2007)
Silk
Released June 2007 - Taiwanese, sci-fi, ghost story
This is a work of suspense and refrains from using cheap scares and gore. It's sci-fi horror, with a similar premise to White Noise: using science to see the dead. Unlike some Asian movies that are convoluted and disjointed, this is a smart movie that's easy to follow.
Silk has been referred to as one of the best and most accessible horror movies to come out of Asia.
Meatball Machine
Released June 2007 - Japanese, sci-fi, monster movie
Alien parasites invade Earth and turn their hosts into homicidal maniacs. This is an over-the-top rollercoaster of gross and disturbing entertainment with tons of gore and biomechanical oddities.
Shutter
Released Mar 2007 - Thai, mystery, thriller, ghost story
After a hit-and-run for which a body never surfaces, Tun, a photographer, begins to see mysterious white streaks in his photos.
Shutter is a clever mystery and overall a strong film.
Reincarnation
Released Mar 2007 - Japanese, psychological thriller
Most of the movie seems like the story of an aspiring actress, but as it unfolds it becomes more and more intense. The twist at the end is really cool and it's worth watching Reincarnation for that alone.
Bloody Reunion
Released Mar 2007 - Korean, slasher film
Bloody Reunion is a psychological thriller and one of the best slasher films in recent times. Along with its complex plot of ex-classmates confronting old horrors, there's lots of blood and gore as well some torture. This is a refreshingly original story, not the typical ghost-with-long-black-hair movie that's seen so often.
If your giftee is a fan of slasher films, the Saw movies, or Hostel, this is a film they'll enjoy.
Zombie Horror Movie DVDs
My favorites are 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, which are available as a set.

A laugh-out-loud zombie comedy that's a bit more lighthearted than Zombie Strippers (listed above).
Student Bodies
Released June 2008 - comedy horror, parody, slasher film
This is a cult classic from 1981. It's been described as a cross between Carrie and Airplane! While this is a great choice for any horror lover, it's a definite winner for fans of Scary Movie.
Bikini Bloodbath
Released Dec 2007 - comedy horror, parody, slasher film
This is the first movie in the Bikini Bloodbath series and is filled with nudity and humor.
