How to Set the HolidayTable with Ease
Here are several handy tips to help you arrange each placesetting in formal order - even if it's just you and the kids!This age-old arrangement is actually a method of convenience during formal parties, for each course served, you'll always be using the outer-most utensil or item, from smallest to largest.
Charger Plate: This is a service platter that is larger than the dinner plate, sitting underneath and is utilized for the first two or three courses. After the main entree is served, the charger is cleared from the table.
BreadPlate: Placed to the top left of the dinner plate. The butterknife is often set across the atop.
Salad: The SaladPlate is place atop of the dinner and chargers. This follows the natural transition from salad to main course.
DinnerPlate: Holding the center postion for each guest.
Glassware: The water goblet is located directly above the dinner knife tip on the right. Wine and Champagne glasses are added to the right of the goblet only if they are also being served.
Silverware: Forks are located to the left, saladfork on the outside, then dinnerfork. Dessert forks can placed above the dinnerplate. Place butter and steak knives on the right hand side of the service, with the cutting knife edge toward the inside. Then soupspoon and teaspoon.
ClothNapkins: These are located to the left or under forks. Stylized folded cloths are often placed in water goblets, on top of the plates or to the left.
