Planning a Holiday Visit to New York City (NYC)

Any time of year is a good time to visit New York City, but there is a special beauty and magic in "The Big Apple" during the Christmas season. The season officially begins when Santa makes his appearance at the end of a long line of wonderful things to see at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and then the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center..

I don't live in the city, but it's only about an hour away, and when is my favorite time to go around the holidays? Shortly after Christmas...when shopping crowds are finished, and you can still enjoy the beautiful lights at night and the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. In our younger years when we were dating, my husband and I would make it an annual tradition to go into the City to hear a performance of Handel's Messiah.

You have to love city life, and like the press of people and crowds to shop in or visit New York City during the Christmas season.

Let me show you a few sights, and then provide you with a number of tools to help you get to know the City and plan your visit to New York City during the Christmas Holiday season.

The Empire State Building looks just like this during the Christmas season. In fact, the lights are changed during various holidays, for example, all green for St. Patrick's Day.

The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the City when I was born. I remember when the World Trade Center was built and became the tallest buildings, and none of us can forget what happened to make the Empire State Building, once again, the tallest building in New York City.

The Empire State Building is the tallest building in New York City and most of the Country.

Radio City Music Hall

Rockettes and Annual Christmas Show

Many make it an annual tradition to go to the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall, home to the famous Rockettes. Though you can go throughout the holiday season, a friend goes every year within a day or two after Christmas as it is less crowded. A now-passed relative worked for Radio City Music Hall for years coordinating show dates, and performing other administrative responsibilities.

Seeing the annual Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall is a must at least once in your lifetime, you can click here for more information about times, dates, and tickets.

Countdown to Christmas 2012

Christmas 2012: December 25, 2012

2011 Lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Took place on November 30th, 2011 - Check Your TV Listings

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center is an annual tradition and time of celebration with many entertainers present. The 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was lit on November 30th, 2011. It is a sight to see when you are in New York City during the holidays.

The tradition began in the 1930's when construction workers erected a Christmas Tree, about the size of a large tree one might find in a living room, and decorated it on the cleared site in New York City.

Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center

Holidays and All Winter Long

Ice skating at Rockefeller Center is another tradition that has been enjoyed for generations, both during the holidays and throughout the cold winter months. This is a maintained outdoor ice skating "rink". Beautifully lit at night, a must see or do when in New York.

Snow in Central Park

An Oasis in the "Asphalt Jungle"

Central Park is a beautiful oasis in the midst of what some might refer to as "the asphalt jungle", serene in the midst of tall buildings and busy streets. Green during the warm months with trails and paths, benches and bridges. This is a beautiful winter shot that I found on webshots.
