I knitted a Christmas mouse!

Alan Dart's Christmas Mice pattern is sooo cute

My knitted mouse

Here's a little knitted mouse in a Christmas outfit. I made a girl mouse in a red bonnet, but the pattern also includes gentlemen mice so you could make one in a Santa suit.

I used Alan Dart's Dickensian Mice pattern which I bought online. It's quite hard to find but well worth getting your hands on as there are a variety of Christmas-themed mice including carol singers, ice skaters and sellers of hot buns.

I had only ever knitted a scarf before I tried this Dickensian Mouse. Now, Alan Dart knits these up on tiny needles with better yarn than I had to hand and in a variety of colors, so if you follow his recommendations you will end up with something a little more refined. But as a beginner, I grabbed what I had to hand, which was size 5 needles (the smallest I own) and cheap acrylic yarn in red, cream and beige.

Most of the mouse parts are knit in stocking stitch, with some occasional garter stitch. I had to learn to increase and decrease as I went, and also had to figure out a cable cast-on for these tiny parts. The hardest bit, I found, was the 'knit 3 together's on the ears.

Some of my sewing up was a little messy so I improvised a belt to cover that up. I went with Christmas colors for the dress and coat rather than using a different skirt color. It took a while but I'm pleased with the result. She even has a cute little tail made from twisted yarn!

Note: Alan Dart's Dickensian Party Mice are the 'indoor' version of the mice pattern set that I own, and can be bought direct from his website. This pattern sheet includes a Santa mouse plus a variety of other Victorian mice celebrating the festive season with Christmas baking, tree-decorating, and elegant party clothes.

Sugar Mouse - A Traditional Christmas Gift

The sugar mouse has been a traditional treat in the Christmas stockings of children in the UK for many decades. Indeed, in the days before mass commercialism, often the only gifts children would receive at Christmas would be an orange, a handful of nuts, and a sugar mouse.

Sugar mice were part of a Victorian Christmas in England for the lucky children of wealthier families. The poor could only dream... For them, here were more important things to spend money on than these sugar treats.

The sugar mouse still seems to be quite a British speciality. So if you want to indulge in this delicious tradition, you may have to make your own!

I love mice so I love this store! Here's my favorite two mouse artists:
Melody Lea Lamb (has a shop on Zazzle and CafePress, but only the cafepress one has ornaments:

    http://www.cafepress.com/+mouse-miniatures+ornaments
    http://www.melodylealamb.com/html/front_page.html

Housemouse Designs is my other favorite mouse artist. She has a shop on Zazzle and an offical shop.

    http://www.house-mouse.com/
    http://www.zazzle.com/housemousedesigns

I mention them because maybe you'ld like to feature some of there things. I wish Housemouse had ornaments in her Zazzle shop! But you can find a lot of her stuff on Amazon and Ebay (she sells stamps, so a lot of hand crafters make stuff with her designs, including ornaments).

That's actually a CafePress shop, though you can't tell. Unless she's excluded them from the marketplace, you should be able to copy the product number and still use it to put the products in a CafePress module.
