The Joy of Paper Mache
What's not to love about safe, green, frugal paper and paste crafts?
Ah, paper mache, the simple paper and paste craft technique favored by preschoolers and artists alike. For many years all over the world have fashioned Christmas decorations, ornaments and gifts made from simple painted and decorated paper mache. The basic paper mache formula is green and frugal, and the basic paper mache paste recipe is kid-safe.
Yes, paper mache can be a bit messy but it washes up with warm water and it's a wonderful way to recycle newspapers, cardboard boxes, telephone books and paper bags. You start with something you might throw away and your family will have a precious paper mache decoration to enjoy for years and pass on to the next generation.
There are many different paper mache paste recipes and paper mache techniques. You can create simple paste with flour and water, or you can experiment with the paste by adding some liquid starch or white glue to give it more strength. For very large paper mache creations some artists make a heavy paste that includes sheetrock paste - that's not for kids, but it does result in a sculptural paper mache.
I usuallly use this basic paper mache paste recipe that has a bit of white glue added. It's safe for kids and dries overnight.

Dry your paper mache overnight in a warm place - if it's chilly outside, place paper mache in a warm window or near a heat source (not too close!) to speed up the drying process and prevent mold. It's best to only apply 3 layers of paste-soaked paper for each session, allowing your form to dry between applications.
