Christmas Pickles and Other Traditions

From the lens Christmas Pickle Ornament Tradition.

Do you hang a Christmas Pickle in your tree every year?

If not, what traditions do you keep around Yuletide?

Merry Christmas - Good Yule - Feliz Navidad

This tradition is new to me, but I find it very interesting. Great lens. God bless!

I hate to say that the Christmas pickle tradition is new to me! Sounds like fun. We do good just to get our tree up and decorated before Santa arrives! ;-) Great lens. Congrats on LOTD. Happy New Year to you!

These pickles are great - Christmas time or not.
  • Cercis Dec 28, 2011 @ 5:13 pm | delete
No, we have no pickle on our Xmas tree nor do any of the relatives...guess I'll have to correct this!
  • zap1994 Dec 28, 2011 @ 4:23 pm | delete
I live close to a town where they drop a pickle for new Years eve
  • zdaddyo Dec 27, 2011 @ 2:33 pm | delete
No German in my family has ever heard of a Christmas pickle. I do have one though. Gifted to us by an American. They are cute ornaments though.

  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Dec 26, 2011 @ 4:05 pm | delete
Very creative storytelling and a fun tradition makes for a winning combo. Congrats on LotD! May the pickle force be with you throughout 2012. Happy New Year!
  • KimGiancaterino Dec 26, 2011 @ 10:52 am | delete

We have a gorilla - not a real one, but a really nice sturdy plastic one. Congratulations to you - I really like your lens on the Christmas pickle. It is a reminder not to hinder creativity with tradition (even though this is a tradition!)

Never heard of the pickle tradition and no, I won't hang one in my tree, because I don't have a normal Christmas tree and you can't hide anything in it.
  • Deadicated Dec 24, 2011 @ 5:10 pm | delete
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too, and yes I have a Pickle (a Radko, I think); I try and stick with a nautical theme, Love my Lighthouses.
  • AddaptAbilities Dec 23, 2011 @ 4:47 pm | delete
    Oh yes -- and *blessed*!
  • AddaptAbilities Dec 23, 2011 @ 4:47 pm | delete
Informative and very funny. We received a pickle ornament the first year we were married, and it came with an insert that claimed it was a traditional German gift for newlyweds to put on their tree. I love that the Germans haven't heard of it!
  • wordstock Dec 23, 2011 @ 11:52 am | delete
With only one child who gets the best of everything, an added gift is out of the question but we make him look for it anyway. Gift or not, it's fun. Congrats on LOTD.
  • MaxReily Dec 23, 2011 @ 3:04 am | delete
Fun and funny lens! I've never heard of this, but it sounds like a fun tradition to start.

Yes, we have pickle! Pickles are the #1 snack in our house. My daughter is diabetic, so that's a good thing. We have 5 jars of pickles at any one time in our refrigerator, and my husband and daughter eat pickles on their spaghetti! Merry Christmas!
  • SquidooMBA Dec 22, 2011 @ 9:13 pm | delete
My mother stared the Christmas Pickle thing over 15 years ago. It is always entertaining as my siblings tear the tree apart looking for the darn thing. Great lens, made me laugh, and congrats on being Lens of the Day!

  • PeteSchultz Dec 22, 2011 @ 5:19 pm | delete
fun LOTD. Congrats. Maybve you could tackle a different Christmas pickle next...I see a red and green pickled olive stuffed with pimento as the perfect ornament...not to mention the perfect garnish for a martine!

  • EileenSmith Dec 22, 2011 @ 4:03 pm | delete
As a child, my grandmother bought me a pickle for this very tradition. Unfortunately we never actually participated in the tradition, but it was a very nice pickle.
  • BunnyFabulous Dec 22, 2011 @ 3:49 pm | delete
We totally do the Christmas pickle. It's fun to see who finds it on Christmas morning. Congrats on LOTD!
  • RawBill Dec 22, 2011 @ 2:53 pm | delete
Congrats on LOTD. I have never heard of a Christmas Pickle before. Sounds strange, but oh well! We do not really do Christmas in a big way in our house. Just a simple tree, with basic decorations and that is it really.
  • Susan52 Dec 22, 2011 @ 2:32 pm | delete
Fun! As far as my puny brain remembers, this is the first time I've heard of the Christmas Pickle tradition. Love it! My DIL loves pickles, though, and might prefer to keep the dozen pickle ornaments for herself. Great pick for Lens of the Day!
  • TamaraKajari Dec 22, 2011 @ 2:15 pm | delete
Fabulous idea and a total news for me. Sounds like a really good idea for a new Christmas tradition for my kids. Thanks for such a nice presentation!
  • alwaysjules Dec 22, 2011 @ 2:07 pm | delete
Our family hung the Christmas pickle for years and the kids had a great time searching for it. Congratualtions on Lens of the Day.

  • MJsConsignments Dec 22, 2011 @ 1:41 pm | delete
Someone gave my then husband and I one of these for our tree several years back. They told us it was a German tradition. Being from Western, PA myself, very near Pittsburgh, I heard this "tradition" might have originated with the H.J. Heinz company to sell more pickles! No matter, the pickle gets hidden on our tree every year, just for fun. My son will trip all over himself to be the first to find it.

Oh, I loved this! No I am pickle-free but we do have a tradition in our little home of having choccie biscuits in bed with a piping hot cup of fresh coffee (hot chocolate for my daughter) then we let her loose on her prezzies, love it. Very chilled and happy. Thanks for this great lens and have a great Christmas.

We just started doing this this year. I'd never heard of it until my wife brought home an ornament. Kinda funny. I'm sure we'll be doing this for years to come. We have a fancy pickle ornament now so it's on.
  • Ilona1 Dec 22, 2011 @ 11:08 am | delete

Well, pickle time is almost here and our family is so excited! Our T-shirts are adorable and I have found the hiding place!!!! Now I just hope I have 20.00 left to put on the pickle after all of the presents under my tree! We are so blessed. Merry Christmas to you all!
  • Gwen Dec 29, 2011 @ 9:37 pm | delete
UPDATE! My son Ben found the pickle this year! He was so shocked because he didn't think it would fit in the candy jar it was in and almost didn't look there! The giggles and squeals made for a very happy hunt and a Merry Christmas!
  • WNJ631 Dec 22, 2011 @ 10:15 am | delete
haha, my dad always did the christmas pickle tradition! No one else in the family ever really understood it though lol

  • collierlewis_jewelry Dec 22, 2011 @ 8:54 am | delete
I never knew about the Christmas pickle, but it was always a tradition for my husband's family. It really is a rather bizarre tradition... but now my tree wouldn't feel the same without a pickle (does that sound weird???) Great lens =)
  • agoofyidea Dec 22, 2011 @ 8:51 am | delete
Congratulations on LOTD! I think the Christmas pickle is as weird as Elf on a Shelf and I don't use either one. But hey, whatever makes people happy. I laughed at your story so the pickle magic must work. Great lens.
  • CarlittoDunaway Dec 22, 2011 @ 8:45 am | delete

That's definitely one of the weirdest Christmas Tree ornaments I have seen. Actually I don't wanna pickle, I just wanna ride on my motor cy-cle... (Arlo Guthrie).
  • JHFSEO Dec 17, 2011 @ 5:29 pm | delete
    I suppose you don't want a tickle either :D

    Thanks for stopping by!
  • Pastiche Dec 16, 2011 @ 7:08 pm | delete
Yes, I do have a Christmas pickle and I gave one to my mother for her tree, too. I learned about the tradition about 20 years ago, and enjoy having my grandkids try to find the pickle.
  • JHFSEO Dec 16, 2011 @ 7:23 pm | delete

  • Gwen Oct 1, 2011 @ 11:23 am | delete
I have put my own spin on the Christmas Pickle. I rubberband a 20.00 bill around it and hide it somewhere in my house while my family is busy visiting, playing, watching T.V. etc. Then when least expected and everyone is accounted for, I announce, " It's Pickle Time!" They go crazy with competitiveness! It is so funny to watch them search china cabinets, closets, behind picture frames, christmas trees, bows on gifts etc., etc. This year my daughter is having t-shirts made for the entire family. She is also making a pickle trophy for the winner to display in their home for the year and return it next year for the new winner! Now that I have gotten older, listening to their laughter and excitement while searching and seeing the look on the finder's face at the finding moment is all I truly need for Christmas.
  • JHFSEO Oct 1, 2011 @ 11:52 am | delete
Gwen, I love this! The cash is a nice bonus but the t-shirts and pickle trophy are the real prizes. Who needs gifts when you can tear a house apart looking for the Christmas pickle? "It's Pickle Time!", indeed! Thanks for sharing, this is a great tradition.
