Decorating With Plants and Flowers

I love the Christmas Season. I have boxes full of ornaments, garland, and lights, and add more to the cache every year. I love the angels that sit on the mantel, and the one watching over us from the top of the Christmas tree. The nativity scenes are beautiful and remind us of the "Reason for the Season," but it's the plants that brighten the Christmas Season that I hold most dear.

The Poinsettia

The Poinsettia

The Poinsettia has been used to celebrate the birth of Christ since the 16th century. As legends go, there are several versions to the origin of the tradition.

But the fact remains. The crimson blossoms that were once thought of as weeds are a part of our Christmas Celebration.

The beautiful red leaves are festive and bright, and for me, a symbol of life.

Set a Pretty Table

When the holidays roll around and company is coming for dinner, we pull out our best tablecloth and polish the silver. At least my grandmother polished the silver. I don't have any silver tableware but I have flatware. Thankfully it doesn't require any polish. I have enough things to do before Christmas.

I don't have fancy flatware and my good dishes are a short step up from our everyday dishes, but with a pretty tablecloth, fancy napkins, and a glorious centerpiece the table will be set for a feast to remember.

The centerpiece is the focal point before and after the holiday feast. Unless your table is really big, a relatively small centerpiece is usually best. That way it will not interfere with cross table conversations and the passing of serving dishes.

The Christmas Cactus

I love my Christmas Cactus, although I have to admit it doesn't always bloom right at Christmas. My Grandmother's Christmas cactus ALWAYS bloomed when it was supposed to. But then, when it came to plants, my Grandmother had the magic touch. I have five Christmas cacti and I can usually count at least one of them blooming on time.

Caring for the Christmas Cactus

Every spring I plant my Christmas Amarylis in my garden. The following year and every year after it blooms. It's a beautiful reminder of Christmas past and a hope for the future.

I Love my Plants

I love my plants, the fickle Christmas Cactus, the African Violets that bloom eleven out of twelve months a year, my palms, the Wandering Jew, and hundreds more. Plants and flowers decorate my house at Christmas as well as throughout the year.

When my sons are stumped on what to get Dear 'ol Mom for Christmas they know they can't go wrong with another plant.

Too many plants just isn't possible.

I wonder what kind of plants I'll get this year...

Have a wonderful Christmas,

Lizzy
