Beginning to Read at Christmas Time!

Do you know a child that is just beginning to read? There are some delightful Christmas Tales written especially for beginning readers.

Children love to hear stories about Christmas, Santa, and snowmen but they also love to read stories to you. Here are my suggestions for the very best Christmas time emergent readers that can be read by children who are just staring to learn how to read..

High Frequency Words

Children Reading

The books recommended here are books that limit vocabulary to help children just beginning to read find success in their new found abilities. Most of the words will be high frequency words with a few others added for color and flavor. Words like Christmas and Santa are not high frequency words but Children of this age will quickly pick them up. Read these stories to your child first and gradually your child will be able to read them to you.

As your child masters reading these Christmas Tales for Beginning Readers, he or she may like to read them to younger brothers, sisters or even stuffed animals. The more your child reads the better reader he or she will become at reading.

Let's celebrate the Christmas Season with books your beginning reader can actually read!

Children Kindergarten and First Grade are just beginning to read. They are learning the words that are most often used in the English language. Most of them are small words that are found in nearly every sentence they write. These words are called High Frequency Words. These words can be found on the Dolch List

Check off the words below that your child can read. If he or she can read all of these words these emergent readers are just at just the right reading level. You will need to help with other words but since most of these books have predictable sentence structure it will be easy for your child to read them after a couple of run-throughs.

What is your dragon's favorite Christmas Story?

Melissa & Doug Dragon Plush

Pick up your pet dragon and read him the letters that Dear Dragon has written. Each child can be enticed into reading in their own way. My youngest loved stuffed animals so the easiest way to get her to read was to look for a stuffed animal to read to.

Set out a basket of Christmas stories next to a comfy chair and place a stuffed dragon in the chair. This inviting learning center will have your child reading dozens of stories. I wonder which one the dragon will like best?

Would you read "It's Chistmas, David!"?

"No, David!" for Chirstmas

It's Christmas, David!

It's Christmas, David! is a controversial book to recommend. David is constantly getting into things and it seems that all day he is being told "No, David!: There is always a reassuring ending but I fear that there is too much negative in here without the needed redirection that could get David involved in positive hands-on activities.

On the other hand, children seem to love this book. Beginning readers love only having to read the two words, "No, David!" and delight in discoving all the ways that David can be naughty. When I taught K-1 the David books were some of the children's favorites.

I really enjoyed all the vintage reading posters that illustrated your page. Hopefully many parents and aunts and uncles will opt for a book to give to a youngster at Christmas. It will last a long time.
