Vintage Christmas Decoration Ideas - How to Create a Victorian Christmas
Why do people love vintage Christmas decorations so much? Have you noticed how people tend to become nostalgic for vintage Christmas decorations when the holiday season is arriving? Despite the use and abuse of ultra modern engineering and the rushing hullabaloo of the twenty-first century, people definitely like simple things, peace of mind and... vintage Christmas decorations.
Christmas seems to be a time to revive Norman Rockwell's creations, you know, these wonderful pictures of Victorian Christmas villages covered with snow; the children who are waiting for the Jolly Old Saint Nick's arrival while caroler families walk from house to house singing Christmas carols for the greatest pleasure of the neighborhood. Are you also thinking to families decorating a beautiful Victorian Christmas tree and sipping a traditional wassail beverage; which makes our heart feel merry?
If you too want to revive those simpler Victorian times, here are a few vintage Christmas decoration ideas that might provide you with that little push you're expecting.

Victorian Christmas Tree and Wreath History
Vintage Christmas decorations come from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's century
Let's start our vintage Christmas decorations tour with a little bit of history. While the tradition of the Advent wreath and Christmas tree decoration emerged in Germany, it is in the mid-19th century that Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert brought the first Christmas tree to Windsor Castle and started their popularity in England.
When the English subjects of her majesty Victoria saw this gorgeous tree decorated with ribbons, candlelights, and homemade ornaments, such as pine cones and dried fruits, they decided that if the tree was appreciated by the Queen they loved so much, it would have been good for them too. Then, the Christmas tree decorating tradition was born.
The Christmas wreath originates from a Pagan tradition and became a favorite custom during the Victorian era, soon after the introduction of the Christmas tree. The Christmas wreath was made of evergreen and included four candles symbolizing penance, sorrow, expectation, hope and joy.
Nowadays, those Victorian symbols have become entire part of the vintage Christmas decoration traditions and are considered as "good old world visions" and their popularity is constantly growing.

Those good "old world" visions are the reasons why a lot of us desire vintage Christmas decorations for decorating our homes. However, real and original vintage Christmas decorations can be difficult, and expensive, to acquire.
Not so long ago the nostalgic desire for items from the past has caused a boom in the artistic creation of hand-crafted vintage Christmas decorations in the last 10-15 years.
A lot of online and regular retail outlets specializing in vintage items now offer hand-crafted classic vintage Christmas decorations made of silver or tin with that old days flavor.

A first vintage Christmas decoration I would think about may be a gold and silver foil angel shimmering in the soft lights of the pine scented Victorian Christmas tree; which top is adorned with an old fashioned tin star painted with a view right out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
Another fantastic vintage Christmas decoration element would be a homemade Victorian style garland of popcorn strung around the tree along with crystal 'icicles' shining by the light of burning candles.
These tiny "gift" looking ornaments and other gold, silver, glass, tin, cotton or even carboard decorations that look like fruits, pickels, birds... are the most wonderful vintage Christmas decorations of all time.

Many of us in North America do think of the Christmas celebration in terms of images of a storybook Christmas in Victorian England, isn't that funny? But what's not to love - it's so lush and indulgent, and the tree-gift-garland-lights vision is in such stark contrast to the northern winter landscape. Definitely, Like.

I like the old, and some of the new. We had quite an assortment on ours, but I must say, the vintage Christmas decorations do something for the heart, that the new ones just cannot duplicate!

I've always been into vintage. Maybe it's because my mother holds on to everything, that I have to find new and creative ways to display some of her older decor. I like finding great vintage items.

I love nostalgic Christmases and of course the whole meaning behind it...I have put up the same things for over 47 years, they all have a meaning. I wish I had my parents to celebrate with, and listen to stories, but that's only a memory, a good warm memory from long ago.

My tree, the family tree , is all about vintage. My child has his own tree with his ornaments and a few of the vintage ones. Tradition is important and for a brief moment brings back the ones gone from us. Great lens

I have to agree with Brenda, I like anything vintage: Cars, dresses, records, gowns, houses, ornaments, etc. Perhaps it is because I am a little on the vintage side myself:)

Wreaths Make Outstanding Vintage Christmas Decorations

Among vintage Christmas decorations list, we can find both wreaths and garlands; which feature ornaments coming from the Victorian era with perfection.
Current trends are moving towards vintage Christmas decorations such as wreaths that are made of foil and tin; adorned with pearls or angels. Traditional wreaths made out of pine and holly with gold ornaments and dried flowers are also included in the vintage Christmas decorations panel.
When thinking about vintage Christmas decorations, we can't overlook victorian garlands made out of small pine limbs tied with natural bond like hemp and decorated with colored berries and pine cones.

As said earlier, when it comes to vintage Christmas decorations, a simple homemade garland of popcorn strung around the tree along with crystal 'icicles' shining by the light of burning candles will work wonders. Another type of vintage Christmas decorations are those ornaments featuring tiny "gifts" and other gold, silver, glass, tin, cotton or even cardboard decorations that look like fruits, pickels, birds...
Among the most popular vintage Christmas decorations we find tiny candles in holders to tie to the Christmas tree branches. However, using such Christmas tree ornaments was extremely risky and caused many fires.
Luckily, nowadays those kinds of vintage Christmas decorations are safer than they were in the past and we can find electric Christmas tree candle lights in any good retailing store.

One of the best qualities of vintage Christmas decorations is that they enhance the cheerful and warm ambiance of Christmas time. For many of us, Christmas time is a period of the year to relax and think of those "good old times" when things were easier. Nostalgia creeps in and makes us wishful for a rather romanticized period; when winter was still a time of rest for makind and any other creature.
Decorating with the wonderful and beautiful vintage Christmas decorations of by-gone days help us to have that soft and warm feeling of nostalgia we long for.
Among my favorite vintage Christmas decorations are Thomas Kinkade's wonderful creations. Kinkade's vintage Christmas decorations revive those sensations from the Victorian era so well! So, don't wait any longer to raise these very same sensations and, through the vintage Christmas decorations you're going to use to set up your home this Christmas, enjoy the holiday season.

- I love a lot of the older decorations, done with such attention to detail and design. We have a lot of unusual decorations on our tree - not necessarily vintage designs - but they certainly made our tree look like we were having an old-fashioned Christmas! Love some of these...
