What Use are Vintage Christmas Postcards to me?

Why send a Christmas vintage postcard image as a new card for the holidays? For the same reason that I love them - they give a sense of nostalgic Christmas past.

This vintage postcard shows Santa Claus on Christmas Eve checking on two little children that fell asleep in front of the fire while waiting for him. With stockings and Christmas wreath hung on the chimney it makes a charming Christmas image.

Vintage Christmas Postcards

Currier and Ives 1876 Christmas Lithograph PostcardIt is a challenge to find that perfect Christmas card to send out to friends and loved ones each year. By selecting a vintage Christmas postcard image as your holiday card, you can send something unique, historic, and nostalgic.

Christmas postcards where used often during the time period that I love - the early 1900s. Many people would send a postcard rather than card, perhaps to save money or because it was just something new as the postcard industry was just getting popular in those days.

The Christmas postcards from this era were bright, colorful, and often made from a lithographic process that makes them collector items now. Due to the human element of this process each run of postcards was slightly different. People with more skill produced more beautiful cards.

Shown here is a picture of the Currier & Ives 1876 Merry Christmas lithograph. It was originally published by the famous firm as a black and white lithograph, but Vintage American has added the color in the spirit of the hand-coloring of the lithography of those days and reprinted it, to create a beautiful Christmas postcard and other Christmas gifts from this image.

Today, the Christmas postcard is often a personalized photo card. The Vintage American store offers you the ability to upload your own photo and add it to a photo card or photo Christmas postcard that also has one of these great Christmas vintage postcard images.

I Love Old Postcards

Getting The Christmas Tree Vintage PostcardI love all old postcards, but particularly these Christmas vintage postcards because they remind me of my youth. Not far from the time that these antique postcards were created, my parents and grandparents could speak to me about the images and memories evoked by them.

Seeing this postcard of children bringing home the Christmas tree, reminds me of going to my grandfather's farm as a child in the 1960s and cutting down our own tree. It always took time wandering through his grove of pine trees to find that perfect tree. Then my sisters and I would give our father instructions while he did all the work of cutting down the tree. We would joyfully walk alongside him while he carried it back out to the car. And before leaving we were given hot chocolate from Papa and got to play with his dog Buddy. Yes, the day of getting the Christmas tree was always a fun day!

Even the clothes these kids in the postcard are wearing remind me of those days. I had one of those pointy, woolen winter hats and handmade mittens that were heavy wool, getting wet on the outside, but keeping my hands warm. It just makes me think of snow ball fights at our childhood home.

Consider a Vintage American Postcard

Santas Sleigh Ride Vintage PostcardAt Vintage American, we have a two part job. First we display the original vintage American postcard, from the period of the early 1900s, and write something about the history shown in the picture on the main Vintage American site. The second task is to restore the quality and reprint the postcard image on all sorts of gifts like cards, postcards, mugs, t-shirts, and even Christmas ornaments.

Vintage American is a work in progress and we are always adding new vintage postcards. If you want something different to send out this year for your holiday mailing, consider using one of these antique Christmas postcard images and make your own postcards to send out as a Christmas card, a Christmas postcard, or even as a photo card.

We have matching postage stamps, stationery, envelopes and stickers with each design. You can personalize each Christmas card, postcard, or photo card to add your own message and signature - then order as many as you need and save yourself some time in writing out your cards by hand this year.
