Reading Tips and Strategies for Babies and Preschoolers

Remember sitting on your mother's lap while she read you a story? Most of us have fond memories of having a parent, teacher, etc read to us. The Reading experts call this "lap reading" and it is vital to a child's reading development. There are many other easy, simple ideas you can implement in your home to foster, encourage, and devleop little readers!
  1. Develop a reading routine, such as before bedtime, after breakfast. etc.
  2. Even small infants benefit from hearing a story read aloud! While, they do not yet comprehend the story, or even the words, they are soothed by their mother's (or father's) voice, and are learning about language as you read!
  3. Read every day to your baby, toddler, or preschooler, even if it is just to take a "picture walk" and look at the pictures. Children need hundreds of hours, some even claim thousands, of lap reading before kindergarten!!
  4. Start a love and appreciation for books from an early age! Immerse your child in books: board books for babies, books for the bath tub, books for the car, etc.
  5. Have a variety of books available, whether you purchase them, or borrow them from the library. If your toddler is really into trains, get several fiction and nonfiction books on that topic!
  6. When asked, suggest friends and relatives buy books as gifts. There are so many fun books for kids!

Easy and Fun Reading Tips and Strategies for Older Kids and Teens

Sometimes a child just doesn't like to read, or sometimes as a child gets older, it isn't cool to read! However, even though your child can read independently, they still need motivatiion, modeling, and access to books.
  1. Model good reading habits: have your child see you reading the newspaper, a magazine, a cookbook, etc. Talk about what you read: share what you liked, didn't like, what you learned, etc.
  2. Early elementary and even teens can benefit from a read-aloud. When my son was in 1st grade and was just starting to read chapter books, we would alternate reading at bedtime. I would read a paragraph aloud, then he would read the next aloud, etc. This is an excellent way to model good reading behaviors, like thinking aloud, decoding a word, reading with expression, etc.
  3. Encourage reading of all types and genres! Kids need access to a variety of reading material: chapter books, novels, poetry, plays, magazines, newspapers, on-line reading, how-to books, etc!
  4. Reward good behavior or report cards with a new book, a gift card to a book store, etc instead of money or a food prize. If my son reached his monthly behavior goal, I would reward him by buying a book ( I set the price limit) from the school book club order.
  5. Have a family reading night, where one person reads aloud at the dinner table, or you all read silently, or discuss books, etc.
  6. Get kids their own library card as soon as they are able, according to your local library's policies. Have a library day once a week, once a month, and take a field trip to the local libray!
  7. Don't forget audio books! Even some teens like to listen to audio books while traveling in the mini-van on a long trip! How about an audio version of A Christmas Carol??

And What About Boys????

Do You have A Son That HATES to Read??

I have been very forunate that my teenage son loves to read... must be in the DNA. Both his father and I have English degrees and have our noses in a book when we aren't on the computer!! However, I really credit my son's love for reading to several things:
* From the time he was a newborn, I read to him, showed him pictures, gave him books of all kinds: cloth books, bathtub books, plastic books, board books, etc. I still keep books (now that I have 2 more sons- both babies!) everywhere! They are in the mini-van, in the bathroom, in the diaperbag, in the living room, kitchen, etc!
* I worked really hard to find fun books based on my son's interests... Thomas the Tank when he was little, books on insects, sports, etc.
*My son was blessed to have wonderful early elementary teachers that went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to teaching reading!

Do you have a son? Based on my Master's Thesis that I wrote a few years ago, and from my own experience as a reading teacher, boys are sometimes hard to motivate when it comes to reading!

What can you do, whether your son is 2 or 16? Here are a few ideas, tips and tricks of the trade, so to speak!

1. From an early age, immerse your child in the spoken and written word. Have books of all shapes and sizes, of all contents, and materials readily available. Big books, mini books, play books ( you know the cool books that have wheels, like truck and motorcycle books)
2. Read to your child often- everyday ( repeat 2x!) This is THE single most important thing a mom or caregiver can do to foster reading development!
3. Take your child to the library for story time, for special movies, etc. Let them pick out books that interest them.
4. Don't force the issue! If they don't seem interested, let it go until the next time. You know your child and his attention span.
5. Find books that relate to your child's interests, whether it be a sport, sports hero, historical time period, fiction, nonfiction.
6. Find "easy reading" (texts below your child's reading level) for everday, reading-for-pleasure reading
7. For your older child, specifically the middle schooler, invest in a magzine subscription to a mag you know they will like: Boy Scouts, hunting, cars, motorcycles, video games, etc.
8. Encourage on-line reading at websites that you approve. This is reading too!
9. Boys usually don't like to talk about what they have read.. don't force the issue. As long as they are reading, that is what counts!!
10. Remember that comic books, graphic novels, music magazines, etc are great reading materials! Reading does not always have to be a chapter book or novel!
