What's the history of these countdown calendar
The Christmas Countdown Calendars come from the Advent Calenders. They are a typical German tradition and date back into the 19th century. Advent wreaths even existed already in the 17th century. The German Luterans would count down the first 24 days of December until Christmas Eve.Some people would simply mark the days of December with chalk on the door, others would light a candle for each day.
The first official Advent Calendar was created in 1851, so this tradition is 160 years old!
Swabian parishioner, Gerhard Lang started printing Advent Calenders in 1908 and he was the first person to create advent calendars with 24 little doors, one door for each day to pass until Christmas.
