Christmas is the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Christmas time is my favorite time of the year! Nothing gets me in the spirit better than movie night -- a DVD holiday movie, hot chocolate, popcorn, and curling up on the sofa with my hubby and our two cats. Come share the Christmas spirit with these holiday favorites!

White Christmas

The quintessential holiday story

The classic story of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back - all in a holiday setting with plenty of musical fun. Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, this 1954 favorite tells the story of two Army buddies who reach the pinnacle show biz success but lack only one thing - a dame! Every cast member is at their best: Bing and Rosemary croon, Danny and Vera-Ellen dance their hearts out, and Mary Wickes manages to throw the entire crew into a spin. Here are several versions for your home viewing enjoyment:

White Christmas

This version is from the Amazon Unbox collection. For $10.88, you can download a DVD-quality video to watch on your PC or TV, plus a video file optimized for compatible portable video players. Click this link to view a video of the original theater trailer.

White Christmas

Beautiful restored version of the first Vista Vision movie, this DVD also features a commentary by Rosemary Clooney.

Holiday Inn (Special Edition)

White Christmas was an adaptation of the 1942 movie Holiday Inn. Here's that original movie, which features Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire , Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale. Two guys and two gals? Of course, there's singing, dancing and a thoroughly confused set of characters. Amazon is offering a "Better Together" deal combining White Christmas and Holiday Inn.

It's a Wonderful Life

Can a wayward angel save George?

Back when I was a teenager, I remember waiting all year for the chance to see "It's a Wonderful Life." Our local TV station played it every Christmas eve. How delightful that now we can watch it every day, thanks to the wonders of DVDs!

Jimmy Stewart plays George Bailey, a man with a wonderful face but plagued by the frustrations of small town life. Donna Reed is his patient, loving wife, and Lionel Barrymore is the town bully who makes George's life intolerable. One Christmas eve, George is overwhelmed by dispair and Clarence the angel is sent to convince him that life is worth living.

It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition)

This commemorative edition DVD includes two special features: "The Making of It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Personal Remembrance," a special tribute to director Frank Capra narrarated by his son.

Classic Christmas Cartoons

Old time favorites and hot new titles

Animated Christmas stories are among our favorites! I remember when "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" played on every Friday after Thanksgiving. Check out these DVDs to add to your collection.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

You can't help but love Linus' reading of the passage from Luke: "And there were in the same field shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night..." This is what Christmas is all about, my friend.

Peanuts Holiday Collection (A Charlie Brown Christmas/A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving/It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown)

If one Charlie Brown cartoon is good, then this collection of four Peanuts holiday stories is great! Why not watch this all this holiday season?

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (Deluxe Edition)

He's a mean one, Mr. Grinch! The Whos down in Whoville don't know what's in store for them when the Grinch decides to steal their Christmas. Or does he? Boris Karloff is perfect! This special edition also include "Horton Hears a Who."

A Christmas Carol

One story - A Thousand Readings

Charles Dickens first published "A Christmas Carol" on December 19, 1843, to quickly raise money to pay off a debt. It was an instant success and it credited with reviving Christmas traditions in its time. That success has been repeated again and again throughout the decades. Here are my favorite video versions.

A Christmas Carol (Original B&W Version)

The black-and-white classic from 1951 is not as energetic as some other movie versions, but is essential for true fans of the story.

A Christmas Carol

Casting George C. Scott as Scrooge is pure genius. This version is very faithful to the original text.

The Muppet Christmas Carol - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition

Sometimes when I'm feeling down, I pop this movie in the DVD player just to listen to the music. Only the Muppets could make this story this fun.

Scrooge

This is the very first movie I ever saw in a movie theater, so it holds very special memories for me! A little loose in the story telling, but such a delight!

Santa Baby

Movies featuring big man himself

If the truth be told, Santa seems to find himself in a mess quite a lot, considering what a wise old elf he is. Here are a few movies that tell his story.

Miracle on 34th Street (Special Edition)

Is he or isn't he the *real* Santa? By the end of this movie, you *will* believe in Santa. Add this new edition to your collection!

Amazon Price: $14.99 (as of 07/13/2009) Buy Now

The Santa Clause (Widescreen Special Edition)

Yet another favorite, this movie explains so much about how Santa is able to pull off his annual miracle of gift giving. Tim Allen is the perfect Santa!

Amazon Price: $15.49 (as of 07/13/2009) Buy Now

Mrs. Santa Claus

This cute story about Mrs. Claus features Angela Lansbury, who I adore. Enjoyable songs and an entertaining story are perfect for a mom-and-daughter movie night.

Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus

Steven Guttenberg is Santa's son, sent to the "real world" to find a wife before taking over as the head elf. Sure to make you smile!

Just for Fun

Mindless fun for a holiday break

Some Christmas movies are pure fun. Sure, there's always a moral, but who cares? These movies are great for a break from the holiday hustle and bustle.

A Christmas Story (Two-Disc Special Edition)

For pure Christmas fun, this is the best, hands down. Specially made for us folks who have been around the block a few times.

Ernest Saves Christmas

Escapism at its best. No one does slapstick better than Jim Varney. Perfect for a kid's holiday sleepover.

Jingle All the Way

Loud, noisy and totally unbelievable storyline -- but what fun! Another perfect movie for a kid's holiday party.

The Christmas Story

Stories that show the real meaning of Christmas

There are amazingly few movies about the birth of Christ. These treasures reflect the true meaning of Christmas in their spirit.

The Bishop's Wife

A bishop (played by David Niven) trying to get a new cathedral built prays for guidance. An angel (Cary Grant) arrives, but his guidance isn't about fundraising. Loretta Young is the bishop's wife, who learns a few lessons herself.

The Christmas Box / Timepiece

The Christmas Box is another movie that started as a small book. Produced by Hallmark, the movie features Richard Thomas.

The Homecoming: A Christmas Story

The made-for-TV movie that started "The Waltons" television show, this movie still brings a smile. Even in the 70s, looking back at the Great Depression was awe inspiring. Now, in the overabundance of the 21st century, it's a heartwarming reminder of what our grandparents and great-grandparents endured.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever DVD

The Best Christmas Movie

I'm still searching for a DVD movie that tells (or includes) the story of the nativity. Somewhere, deep inside my memories, I have recollections of such movies but I can't recall the names or any details. Do you know a movie (not animated) that includes some element of the Christmas story? Please share, and I'll add it to the list. Merry Christmas!
