No-Fail Christmas Presents

It never fails. The holiday season comes, and unexpectedly, so does your neighbor. Your new neighbor from down the street is standing at your door with a festively wrapped gift for you and your family. Hmmm. You didn't have this person on your shopping list. What to do?

Here's the plan that every one of us needs to have in place during the Christmas season. Get a couple sure-fire gifts and wrap them differently from the rest of the gifts so you can identify them. Put them under the tree. They are the gifts you will be presenting to your well-meaning neighbors with when they show up unexpectedly, gift in hand.

For women: A wonderfully scented candle, a bath set with a subtle scent, a beautiful scarf for the coldest days, a gift set of really nice kitchen towels and oven mitt, a small sterling photo frame.

For men: A nice set of gloves, a winter scarf in a neutral color, a good bottle of wine, a Greatest Hits of the Eighties CD (this will work well for most men between 30 and 50), an electronic weather station - the kind that tells you the outdoor and indoor temp among other things.

The best thing about these gifts is that if you end up not giving them away, you can use them yourself!

Christmas Presents for Him or Her

Your holiday shopping list is long and you've got everyone from your beloved to your boss on it. What kinds of gifts should you be giving to all the men and women on your list?

Gifts for women

For your wife or girlfriend, you can't fail with jewelry as long as you know what she likes. Or try something that speaks to a hobby of hers, a CD from a favorite artist, a DVD of her favorite romantic movie, or something she has asked specifically for. Don't give her a vacuum unless she's asked for one!

For the neighbor lady, a lovely plant, a good bottle of wine, or a beautiful ornament for her Christmas tree.

For your boss, try a gift card to her favorite restaurant, a small sterling frame for her favorite photo, or a good pair of leather gloves.

Gifts for men

For your hubby or boyfriend, try a DVD set of his favorite TV show, or that CD collection he's been eying. He will also appreciate things having to do with his favorite hobby.

For the nice neighbor - try a really good basket of snacks - custom made at your deli or grocery.

And for your boss, how about a pair of good gloves, a gift card to his favorite coffee house, or a CD featuring his favorite genre of music.

Unusual Christmas Present Options

Why settle for the same old gifts for the people you love this year? Why not try something different? With a little imagination, you can come up with some excellent ways to celebrate the holidays.

Maybe you're short on cash, but still want to give special gifts. Or maybe you got a huge bonus, and you want to go all out. Either way, Christmas is a good opportunity to be unique. If you are short on money, don't worry.

Donate to your friend's favorite charity in his or her name. It doesn't have to be a lot. Or, give a coffee mug with a coffeehouse gift card inside to the coffee lover on your list. Put together a photo album of favorite family pictures through the years for mom.

If you have a crafty or artistic talent, put it to use and make gifts with a personal touch for each person on your list. If you just want to be different, instead of giving garden variety gifts, give each person something associated with their name, or the place they were born, or the decade they were born in.

I've you've been blessed with a big bonus and you really want to do it up, go for a great family vacation. Put travel brochures of your destination and an itinerary in a big box and wrap it up. Rich, poor or in the middle, be creative and enjoy!

A gift or a present is the transfer of something, without the need for compensation that is involved in trade. A gift is a voluntary act which does not require anything in return. Even though it involves possibly a social expectation of reciprocity, or a return in the form of prestige or power, a gift is meant to be free.

In many human societies, the act of mutually exchanging money, goods, etc. may contribute to social cohesion. Economists have elaborated the economics of gift-giving into the notion of a gift economy.

By extension the term gift can refer to anything that makes the other happier or less sad, especially as a favour, including forgiveness and kindness.
