What Kind of Christmas Scene Will You Create in 2007?

One of the best parts of the holiday season is decorating. Many of us decorate outside, creating Christmas scenes that vary from solemn and reverent nativities, to inflatable holiday themed Disney characters frolicking in the yard. What will you choose this year?

If you love the idea of a winter wonderland theme, it is quite easy to accomplish. Use clear or white lights, plenty of sparkling ornaments, and some animated and lighted deer or a lighted snowman.

If you lean towards celebrating the birth of Jesus, use a nativity scene as the centerpiece, either one that lights from within the pieces or with lights trained on the scene for night viewing. Put a lighted star above the manger to symbolize the star the Wise Men followed.

If you're looking for a fun idea, create a scene with some inflatables. You can find Disney characters, snow globes, and Santa, just to mention a few. If you get excited and want to do all of the above, go for it!

Try to keep your scenes separated a bit, just so your yard doesn't look like a mish-mash. If you want to keep it very simple, string lights of one color in the shrubs and low trees. Add a lighted wreath on your door, and you have an inviting and elegant yard.

How to Build a Christmas Nativity Scene

For many, Christmas is a time to reflect on the birth of Jesus, and what better way to do that than by placing a beautiful nativity in your yard? What are your options for building an inspiring nativity scene?

Most stores that offer holiday decorations have selections of nativity scenes. There are plastic scenes, and maybe that sounds a bit tacky, but many are made with wonderful detail and come not only with Joseph, Mary and Jesus, but animals and wise men, too.

Many light from the inside so you don't have to train lights on them. These are durable and will last for years and years. One-dimensional wood nativities can also be purchased, and are very nice for small areas.

Make sure that you carefully store the pieces so that you'll get years of enjoyment from them. Very realistic nativities can also be found or built. Real looking mangers and cribs with three-dimensional characters create a realistic scene.

If you have a large yard, these can work well. With all the nativity scenes, you can add hay and other elements that will give a more authentic look.

Creating a Fun Winter Christmas Snow Scene

"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow." Or so the song goes. Or how about "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas." If you live in areas where snow is no problem in December, you don't need to wonder how you're going to create a snowy Christmas scene, but it you live in more temperate areas or the South, you have a challenge. How can you make your yard look like a winter wonderland?

It's probably best to forget trying to make fake snow. It's not going to work well and will most likely just create a mess for you and your neighbors. Instead, try some of these ideas to give a wintry feeling for the holidays.

Consider using the clear "icicle" lights that hang from your roof and add clear lights to your shrubs as well. Consider putting a grouping of artificial trees in the yard, the kind that have white flocking on the branches.

Hang some sparkling ornaments on them and train lights on them so that at night they shine. You could also use the lighted and animated deer or snowmen that can be found in the holiday department at most stores to help create a winter scene.

Finish your snow scene with a green wreath decorated with clear twinkling lights and shiny ornaments on your front door. Your neighbors will love your winter wonderland!
