Hear a Christmas Song on the Radio? Winter's Here!

A certain herald of winter and the holidays is when the first Christmas song is heard on the radio. Whatever the song, one thing's for certain and that is its airplay means that winter has arrived and with it, all the festivities, joy, and celebration that comes with it. For some reason, nothing says winter like a favorite Christmas song.

Usually during the holidays, there will be one (or two) radio stations that dedicate their entire playlist to Christmas songs. Once these stations launch, you know that Christmas is near.

However, the majority of radio stations keep to their regular programming and only every hour or so, play a holiday song like "Jingle Bells" or "Let It Snow." Pop stations usually play the classics, but sung by contemporary artists like the latest boy band or pop star.

Adult-contemporary stations are more likely to play the standards, such as those sung by Tony Bennet, Bing Crosby, or Judy Garland. For classical stations, the Christmas song of choice is often "Silent Night," "Adeste Fideles" ("O Come, All Ye Faithful") and Beethoven's "Joy to the World."

Indeed, a Christmas song has the uncanny ability to get listeners in the holiday spirit. Once you hear it, the chances are likely you'll be singing or humming the tune for the rest of the day, week, winter holiday.

What Christmas Song Gets Stuck in Your Head?

Nothing captures the holiday spirit like a favorite Christmas song. It gets us smiling and reminiscing and somehow manages to stay with us throughout the season. These time-honored songs never get old and are the ones you most likely know all the words to. Is it "Jingle Bells"? "Silent Night"? "Rudolph"?

On the way to school, shopping for gifts, hanging the holiday lights -- these are the occasions when you might just find yourself singing or humming a Christmas song without even realizing it. 'Tis the season for singing out loud and everyone does it, too.

The most common songs heard are the quick-paced ones like "Jingle Bells," "Joy to the World," or "Sleigh Ride." These jolly and thunderous songs boom over mall sound systems, blast on the radio, and get scooped up by anyone within earshot. Even if you try to resist, it's difficult not to join in the next time the singers sing, "Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting tingling too." It's infectious.

However, the more solemn Christmas songs are classics for a reason as well. If "Silent Night" is heard, chances are you'll be singing it to yourself the rest of the afternoon. A few bars of "Glory to the Newborn King"? And you're finishing the rest.

Unique to Christmas, songs and carols are part of a collective tradition. No other holiday is there such a vast choice of songs to sing, share, and feel good with. And they always get stuck in your head, no matter what you might tell yourself. All it takes is a "Have yourself a..." and you're following with - "merry little Christmas."

Christmas Songs That Aren't About Christmas

While Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, not all Christmas songs, and traditions for that matter, are specifically about this miracle. In fact, some Christmas songs are simply about winter and the spirit of the season.

Examples include "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Jingle Bells," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," "Jingle Bell Rock," and "The Christmas Song" (also known as "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire").

These songs all evoke thoughts of Winter, family, and the holiday season, i.e. chestnuts, sleigh rides, and snow. Of course on the other hand, there are many a Christmas song that are about Jesus Christ and the miracle of his birth. In inventive and lyrical ways, they speak of Him and whether it's a little drummer boy or a partridge in a pear tree, these songs are about Jesus.

Popular songs include "The Little Drummer Boy," "Twelve Days of Christmas," "Joy to the World," "Glory to the Newborn King," and "Adeste Fideles" ("O Come All Ye Faithful").

In addition to these songs, there are also Christmas songs that are about Santa Clause, and while his story began as a Christian saint, he somehow evolved into the jolly fellow who has a toy workshop in the North Pole.

Songs about him are for the most part all pep and spirit, with the most well-known one being "Santa Clause Is Coming to Town." In addition, "Frosty the Snowman" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" are two other popular Christmas songs that have nothing to do with the actual Christmas of Christmas season.
