What is Google Chrome OS?

Ranked #14,090 in Computers & Electronics, #283,965 overall

Would you like a web-based operating system?

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system based on the Google Chrome browser that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. It has been designed for people who live on the web: searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends.

The open source code for Google Chrome OS Beta is also now available as Chromium OS from www.chromium.org, so you can compile your own copy, and there is already a ready-to-use version built specifically for USB drives called "ChromiumOS Zero" (1Gb USB drive) and "ChromiumOS Flow" (2Gb USB drive).

Although I would love to use Google chrome OS, I would still use Ubuntu, because it would be frusturating not to have a desktop.

My little netbook is running XP and doing wonderfully with it. It runs a couple programs that aren't available online: Audacity, Gimp. If someone used their netbook only for online use, i could see how there might be advantages to Chrome OS. I do like the Chrome browser.
