Crohn's Disease Defined

WHAT IS CROHN'S DISEASE

Crohn's disease is a chronic (ongoing) disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Although it can involve any area of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the small intestine and/or colon.

It's generally believed that Crohns disease is marked by an abnormal response by the body's immune system. The immune system is made up of a variety of cells and proteins. Their primary function is to protect the body from foreign invasions such as viruses and bacteria. However, people who suffer from Crohns Diseases have a "broken" immune system.

Some researchers believe that the immune system mistakenly perceives microbes, such as native bacteria, as foreign as invaders and launches an attack. In this case, the body sends white blood cells into the lining of the intestines, where they create chronic inflammation. Additionally, they spawn harmful production that eventually leads to ulcerations and bowel injury. This is when the sufferer experiences the symptoms of IBD.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CROHN'S DISEASE

Symptoms may range from mild to severe and include persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, high fever, rectal bleeding and a noticeable loss of appetite. These are the most common signs however, they may vary from person to person and can change over a period of time. This condition is not limited to just the GI tract, it may also affect the eyes, skin, joints and even liver.

Crohn's disease is a chronic condition which means that the sufferer may go through period in which the conditions could flare up and the symptoms can become more severe. These episodes could be followed by experiences of remission in which the symptoms disappear and the patient appears to return to good health.
