Chronic Low Back Pain Relief and Management

For the sufferer of chronic low back pain, life can be downright agonizing. While many Americans experience some bout of back pain at one time or another, those who must endure it constantly try anything and everything to cope with the pain Often times it leads to a mix of emotions including anger and depression over the condition. The good news is that you can find ways to effectively deal with your back pain and make it much more manageable. In many cases, people have been able to return to the activities they love with the right treatments and precautions taken.

Standard Diagnosis & Treatment

In many back pain sufferers, doctors will assess the level of pain and discomfort through various tests and order X-Rays or MRI scans depending on how long the pain lasts. This is done to rule out problems with the spine including tumors or herniated discs. From there, a doctor will typically put a patient on pain pills, and prescribe rest coupled with physical therapy. Should the pain persist, it's termed "Chronic" and the doctor may prescribe more pills and therapies. A patient can also decide to take matters into their hands by visiting specialists, and seeking out other therapeutic treatment methods. This webpage will educate on the other options you have in taking control of your back pain!

Exercise, Diet & Physical Therapy

This method of managing and treating your low back pain comes first and foremost. Many times people can help alleviate their pains and symptoms simply by getting a healthy dose of some sort of exercise regularly. If the back pain makes it tough to lift weights or run, you can try yoga or a walking routine to get the blood flowing. Yoga has been known to help relax people and their are specific moves and methods just for pain relief. Another physical therapy plan may be weight and aerobic workouts in swimming pools. A physical therapist may even use these in your treatment. Check into these with your doctor or health professional.

Also, your diet plays a big part in your pain management and treatment. The reason is that if you're taking medications for things like pain, depression and anxiety certain foods or drinks may get in the way of your pain relief. Examples are alcohol and caffeine, both of which can raise anxiety or depression, and counteract the effects of meds you may be taking.

Additionally, if you've got low back pain, getting rid of excess weight at the midsection area may help to relieve this pain. Strengthening the surrounding muscles through physical therapy and exercises you complete on your own can make a world of difference.

It's very important to keep your general health in check with your doctor, and its' even more important when trying to manage a condition of low back pain on the chronic level!

Chiropractor & Acupuncture Therapy

While physical therapy is one effective way many people work on managing their chronic back pain, others choose to visit a different pain specialist. Chiropractors, acupuncturists and massage therapists can all make a difference in treating your back pain.

A chiropractor will take a look at your various X-rays, MRI film and other doctor information to help decide the best way to treat you. They generally work on aligning your spine through various manipulations. You've often heard people say they are going to get their "back cracked" which means having themselves re-aligned. Don't worry, it's not quite as rough as some make it sound. Do your homework before choosing a chiropractor, and consult your physician as well before making that decision.

Acupuncturists work differently than chiropractors in that they locate various pressure points which help with blood flow and circulation for parts of the body. Tiny pins are inserted into these pressure points and the patient lies down to relax while the pins help open up the channels and relieve pain. The acupuncturist may need just 4 visits, or more but many people may report an instant improvement in terms of their pain. You can see more about how acupuncture works in the video presentation below.

Acupuncturists, chiropractors and massage therapists also tend to work with natural alternative medicines. They may be able to suggest some additional things to incorporate into your diet on a daily basis that help with pain relief. For example, a chiropractor once recommended mixing flax seed into a protein shake or other foods daily to help with the strengthening of joints. An acupuncturist recommended for me to consume Goji berries for their health benefits, including energy. As always, consult with your doctor before adding a supplement in with other prescribed meds.

Other Treatment Ideas

Treating back pain with prescribed medications, aspirin, heating pads and exercise may only take you so far. As technology has advanced, there have been many exciting products introduced onto the market to help people deal with chronic back pain and other conditions. These may be found in your therapist's office, or you could purchase these for your home, should you decide to invest more in your health.

An infomercial you may have seen is for the Back2Life machine. This revolutionary device costs about $200 and is supposed to help open up the vertebrae to allow better blood flow and circulation to the back pain spot. It's said to work in just 12 minutes, according to the infomercial, and according to the fine print results vary. They also claim it's a big hit in Europe with back pain specialists, but people are always at their own risk with infomercial products.

One piece of interesting technology that's been approved by specialists is the Human Touch Massage Chairs. These massage chairs mimic the effects of human touch massage, not only working your entire back with kneading, compression and other massage techniques, but also massaging your calves, feet, arms and thighs.

The portable FAR infrared saunas are also interesting devices you can purchase for your home. You may have seen these on shopping channels or infomercials. They are basically fold-up tent saunas that you can sit inside. They provide infrared rays that penetrate deeper into the body than traditional sauna heat does, and have been used by many back pain sufferers to relieve back pain.

The items mentioned above may be pricey, but if you add up the amount spend on various treatments, doctor visits, meds and other related-expenses for your back pain, they may make sense as an investment into your general health and well-being!
