The Chrysler Building's Crowning Glory

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco masterpiece

Chrysler Building, New York City, New York State, USA

The terraced crown of the Chrysler Building has 7 radiating terraced arches on each face, forming a groin vault - two barrel vaults that come together at right angles. The arches are clad in ribbed and riveted austenitic stainless steel with radiating triangular shaped windows. A public viewing gallery was originally located on the 71st floor, but it was closed to the public in 1945. The upper floors of the crown housed radio, and later, television broadcast equipment for several decades, although there are no longer any broadcasts done from the Chrysler Building site.

Suddenly A Spire on the Chrysler Building's Crown

The Chrysler Building was the World's Tallest Building

Chrysler Building

The simultaneous building of 40 Wall Street [now known as the Trump Building] caused a rival competition for the right to claim the title of the World's Tallest Building. It looked as though the 40 Wall Street Building would be taller. However, Van Alen had secretly constructed a spire for the Chrysler Building. On October 23, 1929, the spire was installed. Constructed in 4 sections, it was hoisted into place one section at a time and riveted together in the space of only 90 minutes. It was a breathtaking feat that sealed the title of World's Tallest Building for the Chrysler Building.

Just under a year after its dedication, the Empire State Building surpassed the Chrysler Building as the World's Tallest Building.

My favorites include the Dakota apt building and Central Park and I love to walk around Lincoln Center and sit in back by the Henry Moore sculptures and pool of water. My favorite buildings in NYC are the Dakota and the Chrysler Bldg, This is a fantastic lens with the best images ever! (I was just writing about the Chrysler Bldg for a new lens on Art Deco architecture. I'll feature this lens on it.)

Amazing that it took only two years to build, I doubt that a comparable building would get completed in that time these days. A wonderful piece of architecture and an interesting lens.
