A True American Hero - Brigadier General Charles "Chuck" Yeager

I feel very fortunate that I've been able to spend some time with General Chuck Yeager. He was my guest at the Driftwood Lodge in SE Alaska, during the first week of September 2007, and then again in 2008. We chatted a bit, he ate my food, but I mainly listened to his stories.

General Yeager is a very generous story teller. Just ask, and you'll be blessed with a chunk of living history that might just take your breath away. And the General knows more than a little about losing one's breath - his head was on fire, once, when he passed out in an airplane, thousands of feet above the Earth.

It's one thing to watch "The Right Stuff" on the screen, or to read his amazing biography. It's a completely different adventure to experience "history live", while listening to General Chuck Yeager's own rendition of the moment when he broke through the sound barrier.

I'm proud to present my personalized autograph, depicting General Chuck Yeager after his last flight on an F-15E, in October 2002.

Why I Admire General Chuck Yeager

He is a humble hero
The General waves off any gushing admirers with the words: "I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time." (To fly faster than sound, for the first time in history, no less. Yeah right, General!)

He is a funny hero
I asked Chuck Yeager about his experiences in WWII Germany. He replied: "The Nazis were too stupid to catch a hillbilly from West Virginia!" (Thank God, thinks this German.)

He has a heroic palate
General Yeager liked my cooking so much, he announced a return visit this year. The fabulous salmon fishing might be a reason, too. (I can't wait to feed you again, General!)

Update: The General and his lovely wife Victoria came back in 2008!

Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (born February 13, 1923) is a former brigadier general in the United States Air Force and noted test pilot. In 1947, he became the first pilot (at age 24) to travel faster than sound. Originally retiring as a brigadier general, Yeager was promoted to major general on the Air Force's retired list 20 years later for his military achievements.

His career began in World War II as a private in the U.S. Army Air Forces. After serving as an aircraft mechanic, in September, 1942 he entered enlisted pilot training and upon graduation was promoted to the rank of Flight Officer (WW 2 U.S. Army Air Forces rank equivalent to Warrant Officer) and became a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot. After the war he became a test pilot of many kinds of aircraft and rocket planes. Yeager was the first man to...
