My Touch Gadget History

My Exciting History of Touch Gadgets

Technology sure has changed things. You used to need wood, bristle, and cloth to express yourself. Today, one can just scoop up a phone and point a finger at it.

Artists have gotten most of the cool toys, in my opinion. Everybody has heard of Bamboos, right? Even if you haven't, you're bound to have some experience with one item in this list.

Apple's iPod Touch

iPod TouchI've never owned an iPhone, but my first touch gadget was the next best thing. Enter... the iPod Touch.

I was in love the moment I held this baby. That lighter app really sold me. My job supplied us with Blackberrys, and they were less than capable. Friends and family boasted about their awesome Apple phone, and I was stuck with what seemed like a paperweight in comparison.

After snagging a Touch, I was finally able to enjoy Angry Birds like normal folk. Life was good.

Wacom's Intuos3

Wacom IntuosI seldom draw on paper anymore. You can thank Wacom for that. They are responsible for some of the best pen-input devices in the world. Not long after acquiring my iPod, I was blessed with an Intuos3.

These came in varying sizes. Their largest one is so big, it needs its own table. I'm serious, I had to unearth my fold-up card table to have a spot for this beast!

Intuos' usually ship with a wireless mouse, pen, pen stand, and of course, the tablet. A CD even has some awesome Photoshop brushes. When you can't afford a Cintiq, this is a great alternative.

Wacom's Bamboo

Wacom BambooI REALLY wish I was a better artist, but that doesn't stop me from trying. I gave freelancing a whirl, and decided that I needed a mobile workshop. Well, I can't carry my fatty Inuos3 around, so a Bamboo would have to do.

Bamboos are those neat little drawing tablets you may have seen at Best Buy. That's where I got mine anyway. Mine was older than the image shown, so the buttons were round.

The button placement was great though, and just like the Intuos', you can program the buttons to do whatever you want. My only beef was the small draw area, but you get used to it.

Motorola's Droid 2

Motorola Droid 2Oh my god, I was so glad to get this. Afterward, I sold my iPod Touch and, you guessed it, downloaded Angry Birds.

At the time, I was a texting MACHINE. The pull-out keyboard was a major perk and driving force behind the purchase.

I had issues with it at first. Sometimes the phone would freeze up when I would swipe to unlock it. Then, it would reset. If you looked closely, you could still see the time when it froze. The phone has behaved much better as of late because of software updates, and I still use it today.

Wacom's Cintiq 12WX

Wacom Cintiq 12wxHave you ever seen an item that you just couldn't let pass? Something so awesome, you couldn't be whole without it? Introducing my Cintiq 12WX.

It's like another monitor for your computer, except you can put it in your lap, draw on it, watch movies on it. The downside, of course, is it's tethered to your computer.

Tablets these days are more than touchable monitors, but Cintiqs have ridiculous amounts of precision AND are meant for artists. The 12WX is the one you buy when you're not willing to shell out more than a grand for the nicer 21UX or 24HD.

ASUS' Eee Slate EP121

ASUS Eee Slate EP121I didn't mention it before, but I sold my Intuos, Bamboo, and a bunch of Ebay items a while ago. You do what you have to do to own an Eee Slate.

This is a tablet. This is a computer. This is all I need. The EP121 is a Win7 based computer, shaped like a tablet. I haven't needed a laptop since buying this beaut.

It sports a pen, bluetooth keyboard, and quite a few touch-goodies pre-installed. The multi-touch Google Earth-like app is neat. There are quirks, however. Sometimes, it loses the keyboard, and I have to disable/enable the adapter to bring it back. Even with that, I still love it. Now I just need a bigger one!

I have a more in-depth review here.

Wrap-up

I hope this was somewhat informative and/or interesting. I gave my honest opinion of these nifty products, and possibly introduced you to something new.

As time goes on, I'm sure this list will grow. Touch products aren't going away anytime soon, and that will partly be because of me.

You would think, with all of this drawing gear I should be a better artist. Oh well.
