What to expect

Your guide to the best resources you'll find

Church planting. Church starting. Church multiplication. You'll find almost as many names as there are methods for beginning a new gathering of Christ followers. From starting a mega-church hopeful to an organic house church, there are resources in every direction. It's my goal to give an overview of what has caught my eye related to the topic, with a heavy emphasis on advice from people who have been there, done that. Let me know what you think.

Tips for church planters

As someone who'd like to start a church one day, my ears perk up when voices of experience chime in on what it takes to successfully start a new church. Here are a few posts that pastors have put online I've found interesting.
Church Planting and wives
Some would debate the theology of whether this should include husbands, but we'll just say that the majority of church planters are men, and this is an excellent post on how planting should or should not impact your family.
10 Tips for planters
Mark Batterson, pastor of National Community Church in Washington D.C. includes tips such as do something different, make mistakes, and take the long view.
Qualifications of a church planter
Pastor Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle gives his take on what it takes to be a church planter.
Why YOU Should Plant a Church
For all of the people out there who feel called but don't know if they have what it takes, here's a different perspective on the subject
A few early mistakes
A quick list from a guy who's about to start a church.
Perry Noble on dating
Already have one link to a similar post, but here's another pastor talking about the importance of family relationships while leading a church. Date your wife. Spend time with your family. Those are the only relationships you can never replace.

Church Planting Groups

Some of my favorite groups involved with church starting today...
Acts 29 Network
A network of pastors seeking to help qualified leaders who desire to plant new churches and replant declining churches.
Passion for Church Planting
Church Planting Support Organization that exists to promote church planting and to help church planters start more effective churches!
Glocalnet
God is raising up a new caliber of leader and a different kind of church. These spiritual catalysts don't want to just grow the biggest church in the area. They want to church their area for Christ. That's the difference between church planting and church multiplication. The planter builds a building. The multiplier turns the world upside down.
Church Multiplication Associates
From their site: Church Multiplication Associates (CMA) exists to support and encourage church multiplication movements by developing new resources focused on reproducing disciples, leaders, churches and movements from the place where you're planted and finishing at the ends of the earth.
Stadia
A church planting group located primarily in the western United States.
NewChurches
This one is Ed Stetzer's site on church starting. This one is loaded with great resources on everything from the emerging church to house churches. It also includes links and discussion boards.
Passion for Church Planting
Another resource site. It has a few free resources plus paid services to help new churches get started.

Churches that are doing stuff worth learning from

Northpoint Church
Northpoint, pastored by Andy Stanley, is a great example of a church that does everything well. Stanley's focus on environments has led them to have solid ministries for children, family, marriage, college and more.
National Community Church
An innovative church in Washington D.C. that meets in movie theaters and is building a coffee house that will also hold their offices. A great place to see creative ministry examples.
Mosaic
Pastored by Erwin McManus, Mosaic's services are Bible-based and incredibly innovative.
Mars Hill Church Seattle
Pastor Mark Driscoll's authentic and to-the-point approach to ministry has made this church grow in an area that desparately needs to see God's power lived out in a real way.
Keystone Church
This church is a fairly new plant in Keller, Texas, but they're doing some great stuff on the media side of things. Check out their videos on their media page. Top notch.

A little more info...

I really see two "camps" in church planting right now. They're more fluid than solid - some characteristics will bleed over from one to the other. But for the most part, new churches will lean to one side or the other.
