The number one tip to cichlid fish care...
As mentioned earlier, many species of cichlid are known for their aggressive behavior. Ironically, this aggression is also what makes them fascinating as it brings out their unique personalities.

Cichlid Fish Care - Keeping The Male To Female Ratio
Another often neglected aspect to cichlid fish care...
The easiest and most direct way to control their aggression is to keep the proper male to female ratio. As mentioned, male cichlids are the more aggressive gender and they can be very forceful in trying to mate with the female (no pun intended). Thus, it is important to have at least 3 females for every male cichlids. This will force the male cichlid to chase after multiple females instead of fighting over the same partner. In addition, the female will be less likely to die from exhaustion from the male behavior.
Usually, you will be able to identify the gender by observing them as male and female have distinct coloring patterns. However, some species are impossible to determine and in this case, you should perform a procedure called venting.

Cichlid Fish Care - Species Temperament
Understanding the different species will help you to better care for your cichlid...
Some cichlid species only display aggression towards their own species while others will attack anything in the tank, regardless of their species. Thus, you would need to understand the temperament and behavior of you cichlid before deciding whether to mix them with other fishes. As a general rule, pick cichlids with similar temperaments. Fights will still occur among the aggressive species but at least it will be fought on even ground with both species being capable of defending themselves.
If you put a very aggressive cichlid with a less aggressive species, the less aggressive cichlid will not be able to defend itself and die out quickly.
