Introducing The Cichlids From Africa

Anyone that's kept aquarium fish for any length of time will eventually acquire a cichlid or two. Many folks will enjoy this terrific group of fishes so much that they will keep nothing but cichlids. There are whole fish clubs devoted to the study and breeding of cichlids.

Why? Why do aquarists enjoy these fish so much? Some like the colorful fishes of Lake Malawi. Some enjoy the diversity and unique behaviors of the cichlids from Lake Tanganyika.

In hobbyists circles the family Cichlidae is divided into two groups, New  World and Old World Cichlids.  New World Cichlids are found in Central and South America, with some even reaching into parts of North American. Old world cichlids are mainly found in African, notably the Rift Lakes of eastern African. The two main lakes in this system are Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika and less so Lake Victoria. Most of my personal experience are with cichlids from Malawi and Tanganyika.

I've had the pleasure to have bred many of the cichlids from these two lakes and hope to share some of my experiences here.
