Any computer in a dusty environment can die from buildup on the heat sink but you are right, the nicotine causes things to stick more. Computers need to be cleaned routinely to help keep dust buildup down. Some canned air and a bit of time will do wonders to extend the life of a computer. Great article.

My fiance and I never smoke in the house for this exact reason, plus who wants stinky clothes - our disrespectful housemate however (who doesn't even do the drawback) smokes in her room even though it was agreed there would be no smoking inside (originally her rule). Maybe reading this may make the stupid woman reconsider :) Thanks very much for the details.

Great squidoo lens! I personally run an online electronic cigarette guide. It's a great tobacco replacement product and I highly recommend it.

John: What's wrong with getting a new computer? LANDFILLS. WASTE. Everyone should just quit smoking. Just quit!

What's wrong with purchasing a new computer every few years. It's nice to upgrade like buying a new car. Oh yeah and that new monitor on special down the road. But realistically if you open up and clean your fan and processor every six or twelve months you're going to get quiet a few years out of it, and by then there will be new and better toys on the market.

Don't be ridiculous... there is no such thing as second-hand smoke! Nice Lens.

PS Just kidding about the second-hand smoke. :) Smoking = death... for computers too.

Excellent blurb. I have seen the layers of dust inside a PC but have never seen a coating such as the pictures you show. Thanks
